So, I was at Mtnman's property last weekend, and we started thinking about the thickness of frames, since he has a Chevy Grave Yard, we took some measurements.

All the measurements were taken on the right frame rail, in front of the front crossmember and behind the bumper.

There is some minor differences, I imagine it is the steel descrepencies.

1988 1/2 ton 2wd suburban -- .162

1981 4wd Blazer ------------- .164

1987 3/4 ton 4wd suburban --- .190

1988 3/4 ton 4wd suburban --- .203

1970's unknown longbed frame- .196

1977 2wd 3/4 ton suburban --- .208

1986 3/4 4wd DIESEL longbed- .231

1979 1 ton reg cab & chasis -- .236

1984 2wd 1ton crewcab dually- .224

1982 3/4 ton reg cab longbed-- .230

With the minor desrepencies, it appers that GM used at least 3 different thickness' of frame rails.

If you have anymore, post up...

At least three thickness's...

Cool deal though, nice to see a variety of measurements from real trucks.

I'll add this here...

This is for 1/2 and 3/4 ton Suburbans in 2WD and 4WD. There are three listed just for those. Figure in the thicker One ton frames and there are at least 4 thickness's, possibly 5 if the 4WD one tons were even thicker than the 2WD versions.

What book is this? I gotta get my hands on it :eek1:

It's not my book, but from where I robbed the pic from I understood it was a GM book...straight from the General so to speak. ;)

You don't happen to have one of those for the Blazers do you Rene? I'd be curious to see if the frames are the same thickness as 1/2T 'Burbs of the same year.

Like I said, it's not my book.

However, a few years back several of us mic'd our frame rails on our K5's and came up with .151" average...;)

so that's why the frames flex like a sexy little russian gymnast chick. c-channel instead of boxed AND, it's pretty dang thin. i'm going to stick a flashlight righ up against my frame and see if it shines right through. :doah:

Great post. Any differance in the K5 blazer frame rails? before 73? 73-87 87 and up?

Yes there is. The 73-77 are straighter and the rails run parallel to each other. The 78 up frames have a dip in the middle and spread out in the middle. The 73-77 also have a cross-member in the middle which the a set of body mounts mount to. The 77-up frames have the middle body mounts on the outside of the frame.

Nothing wrong with a good dredge. Shows you were searching...and it's a thread with some good tech. :waytogo:

Yeah it is! I don't know how I missed it myself. Makes me want to check my 89' crew cab 4x4 1 ton frame. It's stripped bare and easy to check.
