from 87 to 86

An 86' will be a carb engine. Other than that not a whole lot. Hopefully you get one without a electronically controlled q jet. Those things are near impossible to find parts for. Just look at the carb and if it has a TPS...RUN! that is of course if you are stuck with tight emission as i am here in cali. If not remove the carb and go with a nice q-jet or reg carb of your choice.

86 =carb,87=TBI........87has the more reliable 700-R4 (aux valve body model).86=side bolt calve covers vs 87s centerbolt. And if im not mistaken different front seat style / shape. Im sure theres a few more . Those just off the top of my head

Keep the 87, swap the trans from the 86 into the 87 and get rid of the 86 OR just have the trans in the 87 rebuilt. 86 is carbed and FULL of smog crap (tons of vacuum hoses) and the 87 is TBI and just runs much better and hardly any vacuum hoses.

This is 100% true. The kid who i got my 1986 K10 from knew smog was required and still swapped the engine to a new crate engine. Yeah the performer RPM and edelbrock carb and header ran well. But no way in hell it was ever passing emissions. I have gone through all kinds of hoops to get it to pass emissions not to mention it is impossible to find any of that crap.

emissions aren't a big deal by me i would swap the trans in but i still have a large amount of rot and do not have the tools or know how to fix it

If the 87 is rotted out then go with the 86 if emissions arent an issue. Then you can put whatever kind of fuel delivery you want on it. Much easier to swap out a intake and carb then to replace rusted out rockers or rear quarters.

my thoughts exactly haha, I been trying to figure out a way to keep my 87 but with the amount of work it needs and the amount money i need are ridiculous, i still love driving it everyday( in first and second) but it is to the point where i cannot afford to keep it

In this case, swap the engine and wiring harness from the 87 into the 86 so you can keep the MUCH BETTER TBI. You might have to visit some smog nazi's in order to do it legally but it shouldn't be a big issue since you have both vehicles and EVERYTHING to do the swap. :deal:

This way you get the better FI and from what i'm gathering a better body as well along with a trans that works.

the motors starting to smoke on startup and missfire, not a big deal i know and for the person who buys my 87 block , my loss is ur gain, i just need a truck to drive everyday im fine with a carb for now maybe later swap an ls motor or mpfi kit, thanks for the input though i appreciate it

i agree with everyone else here, swap the tbi injection onto the 86.
