Hi everyone... hate to ask what should be a simple question but I'm starting to feel like I'm out of options. I'm in the process of putting a Lockright in the front 10-bolt of my 1990 K5. I've removed the auto hub cover, the first snap ring, and the spring underneath. I'm a bit lost after this point. I see a clip with two tangs on it (180* apart from each other) that appears to hold in a collar, but even if I pry the tabs apart, I'm unable to pull it out of the hub. There also appears to be an external snap ring but I am unable to remove it as it is inside the outer hub (the part that the lug studs either stick through or what they are pressed into).

Here's a picture of where I'm at now. No matter how I move the collar around to either engage/disengage the hub, or pry the retaining clips apart, I can't seem to get any further.

Thanks in advance for any help, this shouldn't be stumping me as much as it is!

There are some little clips that need to be removed first before the rest of the body can come out.

We got to step six, and we did it as shown. Hub body would not come out. There was something stopping it.

you may need to take a file and file down the bur on the edge of the stub. Sometimes it gets a little turned up at the ends were the outer ring goes. I had this problem before

I did a write up I think on my build thread... I'll see if I can find it for you. I took lots of pictures since I knew this would come up again!

I couldn't find a decent write up for how to remove auto-hubs on a 10b....
I decided I would take pic's as I uninstalled mine.

So, here goes...

Obviously, remove the allen bolts and Hub cover....

This is what you'll see.

It's a wonder how these ever fail....

At least the cap is pretty, right?

Auto hub lock inards...

Remove outer snap ring, as indicated.

Now, these next two steps may seem obvious.
But it stumped me for a few minutes.

(Sometimes I lack common sense.) :dunno:

Removing the "inner" snap ring, is acheived by pulling this clip...

Out of this hole...
*(Note the two snap ring ends, one on each side of the retainer-clip hole.)

I used a pair of snap ring pliers to squeeze the inner snap ring ends together. (See above pic.)

I simultaneously pulled the allen bolt (see below), to slide the auto-locker out of the hub.

Out of the hub...

You can see How the snap ring is held in....

Yay!
The eazy part! :D

Hub locknuts/washer/Snap ring(c-clip?).....

To remove the hub locknuts, you first need to remove the C-clip.

Grab yer Hub nut socket...
(If you don't have a Hub nut socket, you're doing it wrong...) ;)

Crank off the first Hub nut.

After you get the first hub nut off, you need to turn the the 'lock' washer.

I used my hub nut socket to crank it, little by little,
till the 'key' (tab) lined up w/ the slot. (as shown.)

I used my pick to slide it out.
(Fat fingers don't pull out greasy Spindle washers, too good.)

After that,
you just take off the inside hub nut and slide the rotor/hub assembly off.

WATCH YOUR TOES!!!!!

This is where I stopped for the night.

FURTHERMORE.....

To remove the axle-shafts:

Bonk the spindle with a rubber mallet.
Mine needed a bit of 'convincing'... :D

Once you get a gap between the Spindle and the Knuckle, pry them apart w/ a Crow bar.
Axle shafts will slide right out, after that.

:thumb:

If you take the hubs off, you better take the shafts out, and put new U-joints in...

Good write up for the auto hubs. I learned about those clips by trial and error a long time ago. Never forgot them after that.

Beast, your step-by-step instructions are exactly what we needed. We'll give it another try this weekend. Thanks!

Yer welcome... :waytogo:

I had the damndest time finding a write up, for them....
By that, I mean I never found one.

I figured I'd do the community a favor, and post one up.... :D
So far, It's helped at least 4 people... :haha:

Considering this axle (and the internet) have both been around for years, by now you'd think someone would have done this.

Until now.

Well....

I figure, most guys get soooo PO'd at the axle,
that the entire idea of posting a write up, disgusts them... :haha:

I am just a photo whore+ I had a new camera+ I was SYKED to pull my new 10b apart!

The perfect storm for a write up. :waytogo:

Also....
The Dana/Spicer rebuild manual, for the D44's, shows how to do it.
Most of us newer guy's (to these axles, at least), don't have that manual. :haha:

And, the old tymers (and anyone who's done it) all know it by heart ... :D

Well, locker install was a success. :saweet:

Had the tires off, bearings unpacked, and hubs off in about an hour. Beast, your guide helped a lot.

We did have a couple problems. Cracked a spindle nut washer, and forgot to properly torque down one of the pinion bolts. Problem with that was, we remembered that AFTER we RTV'ed and filled the diff. :doah:
