In looking for another picture, I saw where I had already taken one of my front axle for another member that needed some measurements.
So, here is the damage I found that caused me to have to replace the axle. That groove is right where the seal runs.
I doubt you will find yours that bad.......

do you have to check the gear pattern or?? make sure the shims go back in the correct spot?
When I did mine, I put all shims in the same position and I ran a gear pattern...it was fine. If I did it again, I would run the gear pattern beforehand and snap pics to compare it after reassembly.
No talk of spreading the housing to pull the carrier? Don't you need a special tool to spread the housing?
