For the record, I did sink the front in a water hole, so the whole winch was under water and I couldn't get to the clutch lever without jumping in. I reached down to get the hook and then powered the line out. I've considered making a custom lever that faces forward and cutting a hole in the front plate, but having a second piece to stick in there could be less convenient than just reaching underneath. It should be possible to size it like a lug nut so a standard tire iron could be inserted or a socket/wrench.
The other difficulty is getting the cable spooled in neatly. To put the cable away you can just look in the fairlead slot, but during pulls it can be hard to know if the cable's winding on nicely. Just general hidden winch problems.
