Hey guys ive got an 86' K10 Scottsdale with the corp. 10 bolt axles. It has drums front and rear. Braking can be a handfull if some "mentally Challenged person" gets infront of me and mashes the brakes. My rears lockup and here i come. So im thinking about doing disks on the front and leaving drums on the rear.

I searched on rockauto.com and found rotors, calipers and pads for the 86'. My question is how do i mount the caliper? Is there a special bracket i need? Sorry for the newb question but im new to the 4x4 thing.

I searched earlier and all i found were people saying not to bother and upgrade the axles...

This truck has strange axle shafts, a posi in the rear and atleast 4.11's in it and sits on 33/1250 M.T. MTZs. For now its my daily and everynow and then go for a ride on the trails, so im not worried about the 10 bolts.

I'm not really sure on what your trying to ask here? You already have disc brakes on the front. Are you wanting to go to larger discs on the front?

OK, wait, what? You have drums on the front? Seriously? On an 86? :eek1:

Corp 10 bolts front and rear with front drums? Didn't exist. Someone has done some serious swapping on that truck. By the time GM started using their own axles (corp 10 bolt) it was almost 10 years after front drums were outdated. So, either someone swapped in a whole Dana 44 front from an older truck with front drums or someone swapped in just the outers from said older D44 on to the 10b front. Either way, it's no good to have front drum brakes.

I suggest, post up some pics of the axle itself, mainly the diff cover and pics of the front brakes too. Lets see if we can decifer exactly what you have and where to go from here. Just for curiosity sake get a pic of the rear axle too.

Yeah, it's odd. The truck should have front disc. I was going by what he said in the first post.

I've never heard of any factory front drums on a 10 bolt. Are the axles stock to you 86' k10?

If you find a disc brake donor axle at the junkyard, everything will swap. Knuckles are interchangeable if your axle is open knuckle drums.

the more detail on the pics the better, take a pic of the brake itself then a pic of the whole housing picture of the center chunk ( where the gears go) etc.

like has been said an 86 would not have factory front drums so someone has swapped an older axle in

I could be mistaken but it *looks* like there's a rotor behind the front wheel. Obviously I can't really tell because the wheel is there, but through the holes looks shiny to me and the rear is rusty.

From that pic it looks like discs on the front, unless those are might shiny drums

Lol wow can't believe I didn't look. I was told drums. Ok now that I've shown my 4x4 newbNess what do I need to do to keep the rears from locking up? New adjustable proportion valve?

Sticky rear drums could be as simple as a clean and adjust, or you could have bigger issues. Mainly a leaking axle seal or wheel cylinder which would put gear oil or brake fluid on the brake shoes and make them sticky or grabby.

Get the wheels off and the drums off and have a look. Post up pics of what you find and we can help.

Gonna assume you know how to properly jack up and support a vehicle to work on it....... If not feel free to ask. You wouldn't be the first. And I don't want to read about you in the news cause your truck fell on you.

Sounds like you need to pull the drums apart and make sure the shoes aren't grinding. Rear drums should lock up after front discs. It's also possible that your fronts aren't working right like a caliper is hung up or something.
