Front Drive Shaft U-Joint Questions (update)

I've replaced many u-joints that felt nice and tight ,but once I got them apart,one cup was full of rust instead of needle bearings,or the journals on the cross had wavy grooves cut in them from the needles..
They are not always loose enough to detect any play when the shaft is still in the truck..
