im going to put a front hitch on my truck that just comes out in the middle of the bumper. and i know in the future im getting a winch. but i dont want to keep it on all the time. ive seen the trays u can slide into the hitch that holds the winch. r these good for just towing a car from a ditch or can i plug it in, and go on rocks/mud or any trail with it on the front and everything be ok?

friend has his 12K warn on a home made receiver hitch winch mount. Granted his mount is hell-bent for strong using 2" solid stock for the receiver and such and it weighs 90 some pount w/o the winch bolted to it. He also build his own front bumper and has a receiver mount IN his bed for rear pulling. Works good but it does kill approach when it is on the front but he generally carries it in the rear of his truck

here is a pic of it mounted in the bed for rear pulls and you can see the receiver built into his front bumper for front pulls

o ok, cool, thats good to know. ya thats another reason i wanted to put it on a tray. so i can put it in the front or back when its needed....i probably will just throw it in the back til its needed, then i wont have to worry about bashing it on rocks and stuff. thanks for the input.

sure they're good...i believe warn maks such a device that holds up to i believe a 9500lb winch...

yeah thats what i got on my truck. not only is it cool when your not using it you can take it off and put it in the garage or go from front to back on your truck. i used it a few times when friend of mine went way back in fields and got stuck and instead of me going back there and getting my truck stuck too i would just bring the winch out there and hook it up in the back hitch and pull him out. great investment. that front hitch can take a beating too

heres a few pictures of my set up.

when i first got it on my old suburban

awesome man, im definitely getting it then. thanks for the pics and input!...now if i could only afford a 12k winch:thinking::D

I made my own hidden hitch and is't gotta be far stronger than anything you can buy. I'll post pics on Monday of what I did. Allota Beef. Winch mount would slide nicely into it too.

ya, im thinking about just going to the steel yard near me and getting sqaure tubes to build it myself. instead of having it drop down like the warn. im going to bolt a 1/4" plate on the bottom and inside of the frame and weld the main tube to the bottom plate.so its a little higher up and it wont torque on the frame as much as it looks like the warn would....o ya, for bumper clearance. i have a 2" body lift and the bumpers getting lifted to match the body lift....i think thats a good plan. but definitely post up some pics of ur home made one. it might help me out.

what do you do for the wiring?

Also here is a write up on how to make a front mount hitch for those who havnt seen it.

for the winch wiring i would get those big plugs, if anyone has seen an electric forklift, u have seen those big plugs. im thinking those would be good, with a cap on them when not in use of course. but that wont happen for a couple years:crazy: my goal is just to get a good front recovery point for now.

Here's one link to the quick disconnect connectors. I use the 350 AMP connectors. These are just like the Warn quick connectors. You might be able to find some less expensive ones on a underground mining supply site... I've seen them before for around $5.00.

awesome, thanks man, i know ive seen them at napa when i worked at the warehouse, but probably over priced like a lot of the stuff there. thanks for the 350 amp tip!

Shaun: Here are the pics of my home-made jobby. It is pretty damn stout and I get to keep the stock chrome bumper for now. In fact, my hitch has several good scratch marks where the hitch saved my nice chrome bumper. YOu should get a good idea of what I did. The torque should not be too bad on my frame since the actual female reciever is almost between the top and bottom of the frame. Here you go and let pic whoring start.

Only hangs below the front bumper about 1.75" and really doesn't affect approach anlgle. Atleast for the type of wheeling I do.

The "V" I welded on the brackets may be overkill but I put them on each side so there would be no tearing of the mounting plate since the plate has an area where it could tear if under heavy load but it could possible rip the frame off instead:eek1:

yeah, big_blzn has a sweet f*ing rig. The front hitch is so well hidden that I didnt even notice it the first time we wheeled red rock.
