Looking through our parts cataloge at work and came across a front spare tire mount? Never seen or heard of one. Is this factory?

Looks like it clamps onto the bumper.

Bolts onto, actually, to holes behind the rubstrips in the front face of the bumper, and to holes at the front of the frame. The first composite pic below shows my former Chalet's tire carrier (upside down) right after I had sandblasted & repainted it.

In the second pic, the carrier is an aftermarket one from the former (sort of ?) Valley Industries company that used to be in Lodi California. Our Chalet owner who now owns that #0749 Chalet (formerly owned by this HAM radio operator who used it as a mobile radio station) told me about his spare carrier and how it "mounts to a couple of holes under the hood on either side of the hood catch and bolts into the front bumper on the other end."

For our Chalet forum members who can't find the other style of factory spare carrier, I was thinking the Valley Industries alternative would be handy to know more about, but when I looked up the company, it turns out they changed their name to Valley Towing Products after being bought by Revstone Industries, and then the company started to fall apart, where now the people at the company are suing the former chairman for swindling millions of bucks out of it. So far, I don't see anyone currently selling those aftermarket front spare carriers from Valley/Revstone.....

So I was just reading the other thread about where to stick the spare in a K5. I use my tailgate too much to have a tire there. And I covet every inch of bed space. I got the idea of sticking it out front but read about engine overheating. Now I see it was a factory option! Think I will try it. My K5 runs cool, now...

I actually saw a pickup in the junkyard with one of those tire carriers on the front...I thought about getting it,but thought it would encourage overheating on hot days...when I went back to the same yard a few weeks later, someone must have bought the bumper--and they just torched off the spare tire holder!...couldn't be bothered to unscrew a few bolts....

I had a factory rear K5 spare tire holder years ago,I took it out of my '75 2wd K5 to gain more space inside, and I put a rear tire rack on it off another K5 I found at a junkyard...
Years later,a friend who moved to TN asked if I still had it,and I did--I recall it was more to ship it to him than what I sold it for...25 bucks!..
Today those things are like hens teeth...around here anyways..

Front mounted spares were a common sight back in the day. Seems like every other truck had one. If I had to guess, there were probably many different aftermarket types available. I think they used to be sold at JC Whitney also.

I've had my spare out front since...my last post. Doesn't run any hotter but I don't have A/C and it hasn't been over 70F. Also it's not in the way at all for engine work, in fact I use it to climb up there and rest tools on it. Pulling in parking spaces is no harder since it's not at the corners. Looks like it's going to stay there.

And the trend is reborn! Trends always come around full circle eventually... that was a tire pun.
