Frustation like no otherAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

Re: Frustation like no other

my welder dooesn't turn up very high. I just am worried if that doesn't work, then I will have a bunch of welds over top of what I need to take off.

First off those Dremel sanding discs/cut off wheels are worthless for anything larger than a paperclip.

Secondly, what are you using to heat the rubber bushing? A blow dryer? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously, bust out some oxy/acet and be done with it.

/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gifI used my dremmel to cut off a nut on the end of the draglink. It went right thru the nut and even thru the bolt some.

Re: Frustation like no other

worse case
get a hole saw and cut around the whole works
rebuild the area with new metal once it is out and cleaned up

Re: Frustation like no other

hmmm, worst case scenrio I will do that /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif

Re: Frustation like no other

I'd try drilling it out from above,by the looks of the photo's of the cage nut thing--drill it with a small drill and work your way up to the size of the bolt--then you can weld a new nut in place of the old one later,or perhaps right on top of the other one.
I've gotten the "cage" thing to come off more easily by putting a jack on the bolt head underneath and jacking it ip,then a few blows with a hammer and chisel will break the spot welds--but if its really crispy there,be carful not to make more damage than you have too,or you'll have a lot of cab mount and floor repairs to do later.(if its that rusty,it might be best to just chop the whole thing out as suggested with a hole saw--but going by your pictures,it doesnt look THAT bad,and its a lot of work rebuilding the mount areas, how well I know!). /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I had one do this and I busted out the grinder and wacked off the head and drove it out.

OOOPPSI just re-read your post and saw the part about you grinder being to bulky. /forums/images/graemlins/doah.gif

I couldn't get discs today because the place I went to didn't have the right ones. I will go out on wedsneyday and try to grind it out from the top.
It's probably going to cut the floor more than I want, because of the bulkiness, but that can be fixed later.
I will give an update on the 27th /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

Are you using oxy/acetylene with a cutting torch head? I could cut up your whole truck into pieces in an hour with that type of set up. If you are using a regular welding head, that will not cut jack.

All you need is a sawzall, why you don't have one already i dunno /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I wouldn't even try starting a truck project without one /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

And why not try the welding idea? Tim has the right idea and you gotta try it to know if it will work or not. I bet you'd be suprised how often you can jury rig something to get the job done /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif Also the idea about burning through the metal with your mig would probably work. Using flux core my mig burns through sheet metal almost instantly on the lowest setting (25 amps I think).

okay, I will try the welding thing first, I dont know how well it will work, I may have to try it on a none windy day.
The only problem is, the welder is 30 feet from where the blazer is, and so I have to carry everything over to the blazer (little wheels on cart dont work well on gravel) but I will tough it out
If I mess up on that, I will just grind it like said in other posts.

Thanks

I do not own a sawzall, and it isn't on the top 50 list of tools I will aquire next

Well I tell you what, he would have had that done in 5 minutes with a sawzall.

And I am guessing IF you work with metal at all, you must have some other tools that you use. I have a grinder and a sawzall in my tool box to do all my metal cutting, $100 combined. Not always the best, but they get the job done.

i just went through this problem on an 86, i just used a 4 3/4 electric grinder and cut through the rubber bushing and bolt in one sweep and then used a two prybars a little one to get it started and a big one to pry it open. inside their is a 5/16 thick square nut i trashed this and cut a washer out of 1/4 thick plate and then used the bolts and nuts that came with my body lift. and one last note a sawzall is a very useful tool on these projects

I agree--the sawsall saves a lot of oxogen, swearing and hammering--its probably the most valuable tool for the "demolition"part of any restoration, auto or home.Even one of the cheapie 40 dollar ones are good enough for weekend warriors like us--I've got an old hand me down makita from my brother thats cut up more houses, vehicles, etc, than I can count- -and built 2 trailers and a beavertail ramp truck.I hate being without one now that I have one--its like the torches and welders, your crippled without them.A chop saw is another very desireable metal working tool, but pricey--the cheap ones aren't that great, avoid the 50 dollar harbor frieght style china ones.
If you have an arc welder, you can use it to cut steel quite effectively, though it wont be a pretty cut like a torch--they sell cutting and gouging electrodes at the welding supply stores.or you can soak 6011 rods in water for about ten minites, and turn the welder up high(over 150 amps or more, the thicker the stock, the hight the amps)--I blasted 5/8 bolts off my plow that way much faster and cheaper than the torches.I have never tried the "carbon arc" torches they sell for arc welders--anyone here used them?? /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif /forums/images/graemlins/ears.gif

You're wasting your time on a project like this without a sawzall or 4" grinder. Stop everything, work a couple extra hours somewhere and buy some tools. It will make the project suck less and also make the final product come out much better.

I cant "work a couple hours extra" somewhere, I dont have a regular job, and Im in school all day.
I can be patient to get tools.

I've gotten some good deals on tools at the local pawn shops, many times like new tools end up there when someone passes away or simply needs money(usually for crak or other drugs! /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif)I found a like new 9 inch angle grinder for 20 bucks(its a craftsman, but it is good enough for me)--I use it like a hand held chop saw to chop off bolts and exhust pipe and clamps more often than a grinder--I use those metal cutting abrasive blades for a circular saw on it.It works great for cutting sheet metal patches(and rotted body panels)also.--Now if I could only fing a chop saw with a similar price tag... /forums/images/graemlins/thinking.gif /forums/images/graemlins/whistling.gif
