Fuel leak... again....

These are both sides of the mounts. Frame and block. Once the frame side/clam shell is off, the engine side is easy.
Right, but the engine side doesn't need to come out, right? Just the clam shell? Does it come out the bottom? Or does it have to come out the top?

1) But for stock replacements, the clam could come out the bottom of the vehicle? Or does it need to come upwards to be removed? Once unbolted, it must increase in altitude to be removed, or can it decrease in altutude to be removed?

2) The clam can come out without removing top of the mount?

Both halves. They are narrower than stock.

The stock mount yes.
One large bolt, three small bolts, lift 1 inch and it slides out.

And it will fail in short order.

If it come out as easy as imiceman44 says, then I'm not worried about it. I picked up a couple at Autozone for $10 a pop. They come with a lifetime warranty, so if they ever fail I get free ones to install. If I had to pull the headers or something to swap them, then I would rethink it - But if they are cheap and easy to swap, then that seems to be the best option.

Option 1:

$20 total for both mounts
1 hour labor to install
Lifetime warranty on parts

Benefit: Cheap, easy to install, lifetime warranty.
Drawback: Might have to warranty them out for free and spend another hour replacing them someday... maybe....

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Option 2:

About $200+ with tax and shipping.
1+ hour install.
Is a warranty on the parts?

Benefit: Probably won't have to ever replace them.
Drawback: May or may not have a warranty - if it does, there would have shipping charges. 10X the cost. more complicated install.

Assuming that the OEM mounts are easy to install, the only advantage of premium aftermarket mounts are that they never have to be replaced and that they can withstand more abuse than OEM parts. But they are harder to install, 10 times more expensive, and usually have no warranty. Obviously this would never be needed, but to exaggerate the numbers:

With the warranty, I can replace the OEM mounts 100 times for $10. The same repairs with aftermarket mounts would be $10,000.

I guess I look at it all differently. I hate doing things twice due to crappy equipment. And at $125 an hour billing rate, I would rather be billing other people for those 19 other times changing them out. But I am old and tired of redoing things.

You should do the transmission mount at the same time.

here's the thing if your balancer rubs on the front cross member much, the outer ring will move and ruin the balancer. A decent replacement balancer is @$80.00. Yours is probably nfg now. Not to mention fan and shroud placement, and your fuel pump issue.

In my mind tiring to band aid your existing mount is pure foolishness. The amount effort would exceed just replacing with the autozone parts. I do agree with everyone here the after market mounts will not last so you need to monitor them so you don't destroy the balancer.

Hell I have a brand new set of genuine GM mounts I didn't use and went straight to DIY4x competition mounts, 1st time my engine sat in proper place in years

I hear ya. Every situation is different, and I can definitely see where a repeat repair would not be good in some situations.

For the trans mounts, I checked those a while back. They were improperly installed by the previous... "mechanic". I fixed those by properly arranging them and installing some washers, which helped a lot on the drivetrain freeplay.

We have different ideas about automotive repairs, which is a good thing. If everyone thought the same, had the same info, had the same experience, then there would be no reason for anyone to visit this website.

I have heard lots of opinions about car repairs

Do the most that can be done to accomplish the goal.
Do the least that can be done to accomplish the goal.

Build it to last forever.
Build it to last 100 years.

Replace brake pads now because my owners manual says its time to do so, based on my vehicle mileage.
Remove the wear indicators from the brake pads and them use the pads up completely before replacing them.

Spend much less on parts and you will probably succeed.
Spend much more on parts and you will most likely succeed.

Install low quality parts to ensure that you get repeat business.
Install high quality parts so that you get referrals.

Fix it correctly the first time with OEM factory parts, and do it by the book. (relatively expensive)
Fix it the cheapest and easiest possible way with repairs that will probably last for the life of the vehicle. (VERY cheap)

I have 48 years paid vehicle repair over 40 of that full time or more my philosophy "if you don't have time to do it right the 1st time, you will never have time to do it right the second" I try to do the best I can when it come do and move on. I also have to many toys that need attention to fooling around with the same items over and over again.
Sometime inexpensive cost 3x more than going top of the line the 1st time.

Oh and filling engine with the "Right Stuff" will coast you more than buying the $20.00 motor mounts at AZ

Ya, I agree - the gasket maker would cost way more than just replacing them. The labor is way down, but the cost is way up, so its not logical to use that method. Aside from the cost though, I bet it would work pretty well.

fyi - I bought some rubber engine mounts for the 350. I wanted to keep it stock. The mounts are made in the USA by Anchor I believe. The steel was unpainted so I'm going to spray paint it black. I try to support USA made products as much as possible. I got the part on rockauto.

Thanks for the info. I wound up buying a couple of $10 mounts at Autozone. They come with a lifetime warranty. They might not last for ever, but at least they are dirt cheap and can be replaced for free if needed. I'm a cheap mofo. I don't spend money unless I need to. That makes it possible for me to spend money when I need to.
