So I cut a access hole in the floor of my suburban. I am planning to add a access door over, but want to see what other people have done. I know what I am wanting to do, but want to see what others have done.

I went for simple, yet effective. I figure it's not something I'll need to access more than once every 3-5 years or so tops.

I want to do that, except hinge one side. The main problem seems to be finding a price that fits the Suburban floor. One of the ribs running length wise on the floor is double the width of the others.

Mine almost looks like this,,, but except for the yellow patch and no rivets.

As mentioned if you only expect to do it every 5 years or hopefully more, i just chose not to destroy the floorpan :p:

then again i have dropped the tank about 3 times now from other issues, and have done a few other friends pumps, so i kinda have a routine for it and can have it down in about 30-45 mins. :D

Are you guys risky and cut these holes with the fuel tank in place? Or do you drop it to cut the access hole?

Those are screws, not rivets...and it is yellow (for now) and most importantly i did not personally cut the access hole, that was the mouth breather I bought this thing from. ;)

So use a pick-up floor piece as a donor except make two halves meeting at the double wide rib. As long as your two edge ribs come together to end up the same width as the double wide it'd all work out. Then you can hinge both sides.

Then again I don't see the point of hinging anything that would be used so infrequently.

OR, find a burb in a junkyard and cut out the piece you need.

Arent there any yards that will pick stuff for you? Most of the yards around here pick the parts for you. Unless you're at Pick N Pull, where you do it yourself.

Anyway, they may think you're a bit strange asking for such a weird part, but hey, if you're willing to pay for it, I'm sure they'd be glad to cut it out with a torch for you.

yeah i got that from a previous thread you posted it up on, i saw the before pics you posted, wow, what a doozy of a hole you had there. :doah::D

I figure my floor will be rusted enough to punch an access hole by the next go around. If only me sending unit would read below 1/2 tank though...... :D

I will say, dropping the tank on a K5 is pretty easy compared to a BMW. We have one in particular that, are you sitting down? The fuel pump, filter, sending units are ALL sealed in the tank. Fuel pump goes out? Its $6500 and 12 hours labor, but you get a new tank, senders and fuel filter for free! Cap is separate. Mind you most of these cars are worht $8-12K now..... BMW engineers make GM's look like Toyota engineers! For those of you that think I may be full of ****......

I cut mine because it was only option I had (was full fuel) my health wouldn't allow any other way. I am going to use the inspection cover from tailgate and a foam gasket. Think a bomber hatch

Hinge optional!

OH yea mine went out 70 miles from home and cost me $200 in towing! :doah:

A good hatchet and a hammer to whack it with will chop out a floor very cleanly and easy if its nice and sharp..:D--we used that method quite frequently at the junkyard where we couldn't use torches due to pine needles and other hazards..they work pissa for cutting cab mount & shackle rivets off too,by wedging it between the frame and mount and giving it a few good whacks..just wear safety goggles & gloves..cut out a larger peice than you need so it can be trimmed at home to fit..I have used cold chisels, and air chisel body panel cutters with "manual" hammers too,but found the hatchet easier to handle..one guy came to the junkyard equipped with a tank like oxogen comes in and used it with his air chisel to cut some parts off he needed once!..
