I'm pretty sure my fuel pump is on the way out. It's been making a low whine for 20 seconds or so with the key on engine off for a while now (6 months or so?). I don't really remember hearing that before, so I figure I've been on borrowed time. Today, there was much more of almost a crunching noise on two occasions, back to back. It didn't do it later, but I'm pretty concerned this pump is really on its last legs now. Anyone, from personal experience have a guess at how much longer I can get out of it? I know they're finicky, but I'm trying to decide if I need to squeeze it in this weekend (among apartment hunting and studying for a big test with the new job on Monday) or if I'm reasonably safe to put it off until the next weekend when I'll have a bit more time.

I think I already know the answer, I'm just hoping I'm wrong.

Oh, it's a TBI 350, so electric in the tank pump.

KOEO and you are having a fuel pump whine? That is odd...I don't *think* the K5's got a hot fuel module, but I can't recall for sure. But 20 seconds is the right duration for it.

When did the crunching noise occur? I assume before you started it?

I don't recall anyone reporting a noise like you are describing for a fuel pump failure, but I assume they could. Maybe it was ingesting remnants of the sending unit filtering "sock"? :)
