I'm new to the world of Blazers, I just purchased an 87 K5 and the truck doesn't have a fuel tank. Now I was the local Chevy Dealer & asked the guy in the parts department about the Blazer I just aquired and he told me that they came with a 25 gallon & a 31 gallon in 1987. My question is can I put a 31 Gallon or are there special mods that have to be done if I don't know what tank was in this truck to put in a 31 gallon?

31 gallon is taller so the straps and sending unit are different. I'm not sure if the skid is different or if it mounts lower but that's another thing to look at.

You can use either, you just need all matching parts for whichever size. You'll need a tank (duh!), but also the sending unit and the two straps, to go with that size tank. You may also need a filler pipe, but those are the same for either tank size.

Since you have nothing, I'd go with the 31, no reason to go small.

Also note that diesels have different senders and filler pipes than gas, so that's another variable to take into account.

I believe the factory skid plate, if so equipped, is the same for both tanksin your year. I know it is for earlier trucks (i.e. it's sized for the 31, and the 25 is just shallower in height.)

There's a mail order house that has pretty good parts diagrams and dimensions and such:

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/csb/full.aspx?Page=57

You may or may not want to order from them, as you can probably find a better deal elsewhere (especially including shipping costs), but the picture of what should be there and the dimensions and descriptions can be very helpful.

Note that the 40 gallon tank is only for the Suburbans. You're looking only at the 25 and 31.

Well, half topless. Just a question of which half she's missing :D

...to the OP, Greg is being a first-gen bigot. For him, "topless" is reserved for full convertibles ('69-'75 Blazers.) '76-'91 only had the back half remove, which is a good thing (the top weighs a BUNCH less and is easier to store) and a bad thing (you don't get full frontal toplessness.)

I prefer the term "snob" actually... :)

If someone told you a woman was topless just because the back of her shirt was removed, perhaps you'd agree that it's not really the same thing...

:haha:

I have thought about upgrading to a 31 gallon tank, but I worry about the loss of ground clearance in the ass end. I have seen 31 gallon tanks (without a skidplate) that look like a sack of walnuts.

I think, for now anyway, I'll just carry a couple jerry cans with me if I think I'll need the range.

Well I'm not to worried about ground clearance cause she's got a 4 inch lift & 36's under her. & I'm happy with 1/2 topless cause of being trapped in a standard cab for 10 years.

I have a 4 inch with 35's, and I'm still worried about it. lol.
