Someone talk me out of it!
Chloe(my 73K10) turned into almost fully built rock beast.
I'm seriously considering installing full Hydraulic steering.
Why and/or why not?

I don't think I'll be getting her up to 65 mph again. Between the 538 gears and the 42" swampers, that sounds a bit presumptuous.
Possible? Yes, probable? Not.

Pushing 42s when you’re on your side bound up doesn’t happen as well with assist.
Double ended full hydro is the right tool for the job for a rock crawler. Unless you’re a Moab wheeler, then it’s just fine for assist.

My assist works but has its limitations, I should have done it long ago.

It’s not at all as obnoxious on the road as you’d think.

Is it legal to run full hydro on the street? Thought there needed to be some kind of mechanical linkage, hence hydro-assist.

I’m fairly certain it’s not dot legit. But that doesn’t mean it’s not safe, just nobody paid the gubmint to have it (certified).

Since Chloe is registered as an "Antique" she'll never see another inspection station in UT.
I've seen big commercial vehicles that have full Hydraulic steering, licensed and running down the road.

They are great in tractors, how do they act at 65mph?
Fine at 104mph.

And no-one has ever shown me a statute that states you must have mechanical linkage. Definitely not one in my state that I've found. Check your statutes, I bet its hard to find one that says it can't be done. Besides most cops won't know or care unless your driving like an ass.

Full hydro: do it. Plan your orbital and ram for the speed you want to drive. Trail only, make it quicker lock to lock, high speed only make it slower. Feedback orbital yes. Get your caster right and rock on.

How much does caster play a role with full hydro? I was under the assumption it wouldn’t matter?

We have 4-wheel steer/drive ON/OFF track train tuggers and huge capacity P.I.T.’s at work that are required to cross State Highways and therefore must be D.O.T. compliant and all of them are full hydraulic steering systems.
They all have very loud audible warning buzzers in case of instant pressure drops similar to how an air brake system does if it senses low pressure. They all seem to work great and very durable !
