Gage cluster ?

Red's actually easier on the eyes at night than any other color. That's why most OEM dashboards are either green or red. Green has just gotten the majority nod due to aesthetics.

buff, I think it's Duplicolor that makes some textured paint that might hide that chrome really well and have it match the dash plastic better than just being black alone.

huh i didnt know that about the red,and as for the duplicolor, is it just duplicolor black or is it a specific dulplicolor type paint?

They call it textured paint. They have a variety of colors actually. I saw it at my Home Depot last time I was there. Fairly sure Krylon or whoever has their equivalent as well.

jonrpick,

I don't think I'm allowed to post photos as I'm not a full member, and I don't know how to do it. If you PM me, I'll email you some.

You can't attached them, but I'm pretty sure you should be able to link them if you have them hosted somewhere like Photobucket or Flickr.

If you do have them hosted on a site, just click the yellow button on the toolbar that has the mountains on it. Put the link in there.

If you do NOT have them hosted somewhere, email them to me at jonrpick at yahoo dot com.

:D

This is how I installed my 2 5/8" Autometer Pro Comp gauges.

The blazer I just bought has the basic dash. Could I just get the full gage dash and plug it in or is it more than that?
DJ
I did the same thing you want to do in my 81 K5, and I spent a couple hours tracing the backsides of both clusters and re-arranging the wires in the plug, in the end, it almost worked, but I was dumb and didn't realise the difference between a voltmeter and an ammeter:doah: (the cluster I got came out of a 75 pickup) So fried that circuit board:doah::doah: I had to go back to the idiot lights, and put a set of gauges on the dash, (see link in sig) It was a lot of trouble and I think if I hadn't fried it, was worth the time, but if I did it again, I'd find a tach dash out of an older pickup and use that.

shaun love the set up, but how do you like the red? to me that would kinda be hard on the eyes but it may just be the way the pic was taken. looks great though

thanks man, the red is actually pretty nice on the eyes, i like it, the only problem is as u can see if u look at the night pic,the little bulb covers they gave me and i used bleach themselves. so i highly recommend getting the little colored bulbs if u want anything other then the normal clear bulbs.

i have question for you guys. i have a 89 blazer with the a big speedo and fuel gauge in the center. and i saw a 73-87 blazer cluster with a big speedo and a Tach in the center and it has a small fuel gauge in the bottom left corner. would that cluster work in my 89?

...aren't 89-91 speedos electrically driven? If that's the case then I think not.

most 89-91 are electrical speedos, but my 89 is an early 89 and it has a cable speedo and a 208 which most have a 241

Shaun, will you go into detail how you mounted those gauges

well i guess ill post mine up too, whoring in 3...2....1

i really really like this, how did you do this? the printed circuit gauges behind the bezel,..throw that out and just use the bezel and cut it to fit those after market gauges and just wire the gauges up to their sending units and power & ground? can you give us a short write up on how you did this? I'd like to do this exact same thing! how much of the bezel did you have to cut out to mount those gauges, if thats what you did? & what size are your gauges 2 1/8th'' or 2 5/8ths'', i think that's the right sizes they are available in? and what/how do you have that speedo connected up?

on another note, has anyone ever seen the a-pillar gauge mounts for our trucks? does anyone make them, I've never seen them listed for our 87 down trucks/k5's? anyone know if they are available, if so where? i like to have 2 oil psi gauges, 1 down by the filter on the bottom end and another 1 up top by the hei dizzy! and 2 water temps just to compare the 2, 1 in the rear of the intake and another 1 in the thermostat housing, to make sure I'm reading my true water temp!

and another question, i have 2 gauge bezels from 76-78 trucks/k5's that had no air, will these bezels fit in the 81+ dash,(especially if i ditch the stock gauges and printed circuit piece behind the bezel & wire it up w/after market gauges like shaun has done?) i want that little cubby hole where the a/c vent usually is above the a/c controls. I'm taking the a/c off for now, but may return it to the truck one day, can i just cut the duct work back and heat it up and pinch it closed/& seal it, or is there an easier way to stop this duct?

and if/when i do go back w/a/c can i just leave it that way and just let it blow threw the other vents, i like/want that little cubby hole storage for my pack of smokes & lighter, also a pen and small notepad! i know the truck I'm building has all its controls on the turn signal & i plan on using the headlight hole in the lower left of these bezels for a toggle switch for my off-road kc lights, and try to put the original a/c vent in its correct spot down there in the older bezel. will ditching the original printed circuit and gauges mess w/the controls on the turn signal?

sure, ill do as best i can...the 4 small gauges are 2 5/8" and the speedo/tach r 5"... i cut out all of the bezel, so there is nothing other then the face of the bezel left, it takes some time to get it just right but it wasnt too bad with a die grinder with a cutting wheel/grinding bits. and to keep the circuit board there so i would still have blinker bulbs, i carved out the old gauge holder/cluster so its completely empty, all the supports molded in and little walls that were there i cut out completely. but...if i was to do it now, i would take it completely out and cut the circuit board down just enough to hold the blinker bulbs and make them work, because it is a major pain to get the gauges and wiring stuffed in there. and for the wiring...the oil and water temp. r mechanical but for the rest i put all the grounds together and ran a wire out and same with the power, and for the lights, i put all the power wires together and hooked it up to my head light switch. if i was to do it now, i would definitely find connectors so u can unplug them and take them out instead of having them wired in completely. for the speedo cable,i had to get one made from speedometersolutions.com, it is 100" long and cost about $65 i believe. sorry if i didnt explain things well. if u still have questions, feel free to ask.

I love the way that looks much better than mine. I shall do this some day :D

it uses the stock bezels, and it extremely simple to mount. I had to shorten the back of the stock bezels to get the gauges in there, but I was not careful in any sense of the word. it is extremely forgiving you don't even have to really measure it out. start hacking until it fits, and the gauge covers everything lol.

I don't even have the k5 anymore, but man I loved those gauges. in another post I started about what was my best mod, and reading back I actually was indecisive if the gauges, or lift / tires & wheels was the best mod.

I'm gonna say gauges cause i can almost bet someones running the same lift or tires and wheels but i've never seen a setup like that before on gauges ;)
