Brutal!!! Thats my biggest nightmare. So sorry that happened to you. Glad it wasn't worse and everyone is ok.

I did have some fairly valuable tools in there.
One or two HF or Northern, the rest is Dewalt, Craftsman, Scat Blast and Hobart.

Sorry to hear about that. Glad everyone is OK. That is one of my worst nightmares too. I hope you get your man-space back in order quickly.

They pla on paying me out at the end of next week, then the room comes off, we tear off two or three rows of rafters, and then tear down the north wall to replace the top plate and 1/2 of the studs.
Ofcourse, this is after the place is gutted, I finish building my deck and replacing the sheetrock in my house(due to IKE).
I have lost about $10,000+ worth of tools as per my excel spreadsheet.

Sooooo, I am rebuilding my garage.
It is going to be 24' wide, West to East gables.
It is going to be 20' deep, North to South overhangs.
Nothing out of the ordinary.
I am actually having a contractor of Home Depot's build it.
They are called Tuff Shed(sp?)
This is not set in stone, but the best option at this point.

Now, I need some ideas for the interior and would like to see
pics of your garages.
I am contemplating using kitchen cabinets for storage, but MDF
in High hunidity is not a good idea.
I already have my HObart MIG and I am about to buy a
Quincy Compressor and Dryer and a Scat Blast Media blaster.
We just bought stackable Maytag, I think, front loading washer
and dryers to be installed IN the garae in their own room IN
the garage.
There will be one large 16' door in the middle of the North side.
I plan on installing my JD2 Model 2 bender in the middle of the room
so I have plenty of room to slin pipe.
I want a LARGE rolling welding/fabrication table.
I need music and maybe some visual stmulation. No fishtanks!
Any insights on floor coatings would be great as well!

The WIFES washer and dryer need to go in the house NOT in the man space. Unfortunately MY WIFES washer and dryer are in the garage (about the same size as you're building) and it sucks. Granted hers aren't in a room of their own and probably a good thing as that would creep more into my man space and make me even more unhappy.

I used to investigate insurance claims. DON'T claim stuff you didn't have, and find as many receipts as you can. For God's sake, don't come up with any phony ones - I made a good living checking out receipts - phony ones can get your whole claim denied and you arrested. If nothing else, suspicious receipts or inflated losses will hold up any payment.
Just to add, trying to claim something that never was or an inflated reciept is what causes insurance premiums to be through the roof as they are today.

That process has already been completed and I do not partake in those types of activities. I believe in karma.
I actually had an adjuster come out and look at everything that I claimed and we worked out a great adjustment.
They were very good to work with.

Glad it worked out for you. NOTE TO ALL: If you've got a bunch of tools, etc. in your garage, take pictures of it all, keep them up to date - it will make a big difference at claim time. Most insurance companies are pretty fair if there aren't any questions. This goes for your computers, and stuff in the house. Makes the whole process simpler.
I had flushed out a quad motor with gas after it had been on the bottom of a lake for a few days. Got done and drained the oil filter and threw it in the garbage can. Later that day while grinding some sparks went into the garbage can and KABOOOM!!! Lucky I had hearing protection on but several neighbors came to see if I was OK.
So what was the cause of the fire? I read the part about oily rags and such, but did you figure out what the ignition source was?
Glad everyone is OK and the insurance took good care of you.
The sad part is I'm sure I'm next on this list. Oil, liquids, sparks all in my shop at the same time I'm sure.

glad to hear everyone is ok! and the insurance came thru w/o alot of hassles. you said you had 10k worth of tools on your spreadsheet, alot of adjuster would have laughed at that & started their own little prorated list. good luck w/the shop rebuild!
