I’ve been pressure blasting my tailgate to get it ready for primer and have found it take a lot of grit to remove the old paint. Anybody seen clever ways to recover the grit media so it can be used again? I’m thinking of trying to setup a tarp to try and catch a decent amount of it, but it’s still looking pretty wasteful.

If I have to buy $800 in blast media I might as well hire a guy to come do it for me.

hate to say it, but your vastly better stripping 80% of it with some nice 60/80 on a DA.. than just come in and hit the harder to get nooks and crannies, jambs, overall profiling with the blaster... it actually ends up being faster, WAY less media and much less chance of warping...

I believe you. Even tried chemical stripping and the new safe aircraft remover doesn’t do much to the paint. I ended up scraping lots of the paint off manually.

I had a cheap metal shed to media blast in. Worked great until it ended up in a neighbors yard during a storm.

buy some 60 grit gold 3M.. pricey, but you wont believe how fast it rips thru paint... faster than any 36 grit you'll buy...

Cheap Harbor Freight soft side “carport” tent thing with a tarp on the ground?

Recommend an orbital electric DA to go with them?

i run porter cables... not the quality they where in the past, but I flog them pretty good... you can hog more with an 8" air one and killa compressor... but it's loud, yada....

That’s not a terrible idea. Maybe could use it as a temporary spray booth as well. I’m thinking Paul is right. Maybe better to just save the blaster for stuff the DA can’t reach. There’s plenty of places like that.

I did upgrade my compressor last month so maybe I should at least try it. I’m pretty sure it won’t cut it but it’s worth a try.
Trying to find an electrician to run a 220V outlet in my garage this past year hasn’t worked out. So I’ve been feeling like I’m relegated to electric.

i prefer my electrics... anyday...

an air DA can be had pretty cheap... but it WILL test your comps ability more than most tools/processes.. it's a top 3 behind blasting and big blow gun stuff.. but they are much noisier, etc compared to electric.. the PC turned to 6 cranks damn good.. heck, i run it at 5 most of the time.......

either way, I'm kind of old school in that I still like my smooth pad/adhesive lined paper over newer hook/loop systems...

Im willing to try. My little DA palm orbital sander won’t budge the finish even with a 40 grit paper.

What about a clothes dryer outlet, have one close? Fairly easy to make an extension if you do.
