Garage @##@ ups.

My brother caved in the oil pan on his 3800. Drove it several miles before he realized it had happened. I helped him pull the engine to check for bearing damage. He fixed the internal damage and buttoned it up without me. A few months later it has a hideous clattering noise at idle (but not under load).

I check the flexplate on a hunch. Sure enough, the 8 bolts on the back of the crank are loose. He had assembled it without any locktite. :doah:

So I helped him pull that motor a second time. And it wasn't even my car! :haha:

That was 2015, and he's still driving it now. So the rest of his work must have been good. But that was a good teaching moment.

I have a number of my own stupid moments. My blazer's frame rail was too close to the ground to clear the NV4500 I was installing. So I used a jack to raise that side of the truck while I slid the tranny into place. Then, for reasons unremembered, I paused while the tranny was perfectly located underneath the frame rail, and started doing something else. At some point the truck slid off the jack, and the weight of the truck crunched the aluminum bell housing. :doah: All because I left it exactly in the wrong place.

I also once did a test drive up to highway speed, stopped, turned around, and headed back home. Partway home the hood flies up and tears one of the hood hinges nearly off.

Yes, I forgot to latch the hood. :doah:

Stupid. I've done plenty of stupid. And I've fixed plenty of stupid, too.

My 1993 K1500 blazer has slight hood creases at the hinges because I drove it around the block without latching the hood.

Was able to push most the dent out from under the hood.
