Gas in a diesel truck help please

I too have almost put gas in my diesel truck--years ago I put diesel in my '69 GTO and '72 Blazer accidentally,both times at the same station & pump!..half asleep still,on my way to work 65 miles away..
Back then the diesel pumps had gray handles and looked close enough to the gas pumps to make it real easy to screw up and fill up with the wrong fuel..

Both vehicles would only run with the gas pedal less than 1/4 throttle,after that they wanted to stall,and spark knocking was horrendous!..ended up turning around ten miles up the highway and going back home,barely made it too--had to jack the vehicles up and take the filler neck hose off and siphon out as much as I could...after filling them with gas again they still ran rather lousy and it took a few tanks to get all the diesel out..

I know of at least two guys who had wives put gas in their diesel trucks,both were half full before filling,and were driven several miles before it became noticeable..they just topped off with more diesel and kept driving....one said his engine never ran so good after that tank was used up and fresh diesel was put in again..

I watched a new employee at a construction company pull up to the pumps at a gas station next to where I worked--behind the dump truck was a trailer with a running bulldozer on it--it was cold,about 20 degrees out,and he put gasoline in the dozers tank..it started racing faster and faster,while he was in the store paying for the fuel and getting coffee..the look on his face when he came out and heard it running at about 6000 rpms was priceless..

He jumped in the truck and raced back to the company garage a mile up the road,and we heard a loud "boom" --later on the owner came in to buy some stuff and I asked if the dozer was going to survive,he looked pissed and said "NO,the idiot put GAS in the f-n thing and it chucked a rod thru the block".."If you know anyone looking for a job,I have an opening for a CDL driver/laborer !"..

I do not know why they make diesel fuel pump nozzles a close enough size so they'll fit in a gas tank filler and vice versa...it would make sense if a diesel nozzle was "unique" and no one could put gas in one accidentally,or vice versa..

Neither do I, but I've often wondered why they can't have a few non-interchangeable pump nozzles. You could do square/round or you could key them like airplane connectors:

The big/little only keeps people from pumping diesel into their gas cars. Really, putting gas in a diesel is more dangerous, even though diesel owners are in the minority. E85/flex could be another variation - like one additional key notch from gasoline, as pretty much every factory car that runs on e85 also runs on e10. Although no matter the idiot-proofing, you can always find a better idiot. I know someone who pumped diesel into their gas car (do I need to mention gender or hair color?). I asked if the nozzle seemed kind of big and she explained that it was hard to hold it close and get all the fuel in, but she was able to get the gallons she needed.:doah:

I think e85 is part of the problem because now it's "yellow hose", where yellow used to mean diesel. Then green was the diesel standard before many station started getting green nozzles standard.

I've seen a lot of green gasoline nozzles... :doah:

Some better standardization would be alright in my book.
 
Blue85, I actually find the big nozzles really annoying, because they don't fit in my beetle.

It's a good thing I get real decent mileage, because I've been in a couple spots where I've had to find another station. I know they have adapters, but they spill all over.

Gasoline in a high compression diesel engine is not a good thing. The explosive down force power can bend rods, destroy bearings, and crankshaft.
 
I was told by an old diesel mechanic its the detonation that kills things,the gas ignites before TDC just from the compression alone,without any spark needed,and the "kickback" is what lunches pistons and rods...along with the higher temps in the combustion chamber gas causes,and the fact its a solvent ,not so much "oil" like diesel..

If there was a way to reduce the gasoline's tendency to pre-ignite you could probably run a diesel on a gas-oil mixture...maybe adding some straight weight motor oil in a high enough concentration ?..:thinking:..make it like a military multi-fuel engine that'll burn pretty much anything flammable..

I was surprised to read in my diesel VW Jetta's owners manual "up to 1-2 gallons of gasoline can be added at extreme low temperatures to aid in cold starting"...:eek:...I never had the nerve to try adding even a little gas to my 6.2's tank to see if it'd help..
 
Reminds me of when I was a kid working at a gas station in the evenings after school. Guy pulls up to a gas pump with a motor home and proceeds to fill up his huge ass fuel tank. Get's it all full and pays for it and realizes that its gasoline. Pulls it to the side of the lot and intends to dump 50+ gallons of fuel on the ground.

I stopped him before he got that far but he proceeded to do just that. I ended up calling the cops on the dumb SOB. 50 gallons of fuel in the dirt around a gas station makes for a bad situation when the enviro Nazis start taking dirt samples.

He ended up having to have it towed to a shop where I'm sure he was dinged pretty harshly for the flush.
 
Not really diesel related--but one day a large motor home,one of those "diesel pusher" jobs,pulled into my friends tire shop .,,-it had a Subaru station wagon on a tow bar behind it...and..
The rear tires were GONE,and the rims had been ground flat all the way to the brake drums!..:yikes:..seems someone "forgot" to release the e-brake on the car,before they left their hotel in Providence RI,about a 30 mile ride from the tire shop...driver said "I couldn't figure out why so many cars passed me honking and waving wildly--I just thought they were mad at me for hogging the road !"...

The e-brakes refused to release when he finally pulled into a rest area 15 miles away--so he just kept driving!...:screwy:...
