I had that happen on my '83. Fuel pump diaphragm (sp) was bad and it was leaking where the mechanical fuel pump rod is in through the block.

Weird but it happens

Internally, if a carb leaks fuel down into the cylinders when the engine is not running then the fuel seeps past the rings into the crank case. In certain cases it can cause bearing damage if it happens often enough to wash the oil off of the rod bearing.

I just went through this with the wifes S10 4.3 Vortec, had gas smell in the oil. Turned out to be a cracked head

same here Randy.i found out quickly cuz i wanted to flush the varnish i was calling gas outta the lines/ carb. it was running rough.the tank was cleaned and had a new sending unit. so i figure flush the system...so i fill a big coffee can with gas/pull the line from the unt and tell my cousin to fill it if it needed gas.so JR is running great and i look in the mirror and my cousin is holding the six gallon can????so i shut it off and ask WTF? he said he could not keep the coffee can full!!!! YIPE i filled my block with gas!!:yikes: i changed the oil twice and it is fine.that was four years and never buying another part from Autozone ago. oh, and yes gas will bleed down from a carb.

Yup mine filled the block so full it started shooting it out the vent tube going to the air filter. Luckily my stepdad was watching with the breather top off and he had me shut it down quick. :eek1:

I never fixed the truck. Got pissed and traded it even up for my '80 I have now although it ran then.

thats full ..:eek1:i had at least one gallon in mine.so much for a shiney new crate engine.. it went from five hours to five thousand miles quick.:doah:i am soooo glad i looked back.i change the oil everytime i do anything to JR now. just in case.;)

this truck when i got it ( pic ) had a BLOWN 350 from bad carb leak down on gas. guy kept driving it till 2 cyl blown out walls from bad oil pressure/knocking and also turned the crank down so far as to trash the motor and parts beyond repair even in a reycle state of melt down. that crank had to be 1/2" or more smaller than std size.

then i got it and started the frame up resto to show truck status. now on hold for past 6 years. :doah::eek1:

4000 was the starter kit. you know the bit. 1000 here,200 there.etc.JR is like the houseing market around here.i have around $11.ooo.oo total in it. and i could prolly get $800.00 for it right now.the mod's that are done are for me.not the general public.so it is basicly worth **** on the street.:D

change the pump first. cheeper and easy to do.

then when out plug off the outlet and try and blow threw inlet. listen for air or soapy water it at the arm hole. if hear air or see bubbles its bad.

if not its new and you need carb reman job.

well.... ****.

how do i tell if its coming from the cab or the fuel pump?
i just changed the pump ,i knew mine was bad.but my friends k5 had a leaky carb. and you could see it looking down the throat.ya know when you look down it to see if you are getting gas?and see the spray? Johns did that a few seconds after the engine was shut off.change the oil and have someone watch.:D sorry for the hi jack.:doah:

I would guess if you have gas in the oil and its running ok, its about 85/15 that its a bad fuel pump. If the carb is letting that much gas by, you usually have running or idling problems also.
Either way, it is something you need to address ASAP. It does not take much gas in the oil to total an engine. Usually you wipe a bearing first, and then bad things happen.
Pull the dipstick, and check. If it smells like gas, or is overfull, don't drive it until you change the oil. If its overfull, I would buy a cheap oil, change it, run it a few minutes and then change it for some good stuff.
All that after you stop the gas leak, of course.
Either way, its not something to fool around with. It needs attention soon.

What type carb are you running? Q-jet or .....? Q jets, even though they are great carbs when tuned properly, are notorious for leaking blind plugs inside of them. Most re-builders epoxy up the plugs to keep 'em from leaking.
