I have a 2004 chevrolet g3500 box truck (reg. gas).

Went to the gas station this morning (monday of all days).... Start pumping gas in, and then 2 seconds later hear a waterfall under my truck.... Turns out some jerkoff cut my filler hose, and drilled a hole in my gas tank! I think they did it for the gas... but who knows...

Anyways, my question is this.... I do not want to replace the gas tank.... Chevrolet dealer quoted my 1,000 dollars for a new tank... and then some other place wanted 600.00!!

There has got to be a cheaper route! Does anyone know if it can be patched, or spot-welded??... OR does anyone know where I can get a used/ new CHEAP gas tank?

I am desprate because this is my primary work vehicle, and I cant work without it!

Thanks...

thought the new tanks were plastic for some reason. anyhow if they're metal i'd say go get some quiksteel or w/e the parts store sell. worked great for my old truck with no leaks. trick is to get it rolled around where it's hot to handle. i swear by the stuff. i'd never try to weld a gas tank though some might

Plastic tanks can be fixed if the hole is not too big. The tank needs to be out of the truck. Wash it out thouroughly and let it dry. Smell for fuel vapors. If none are present, do the following.

Get a rasp file and shave some material off of a couple of thick areas in the corners. Melt the shavings onto waxed paper to make a cap. Using a heat source, we used a camping lighter, a heat gun might work, you can melt the cap (blob) onto the tank. You will need to heat the tank around the area to be fixed. We did this in Mexico to get a truck back from the midle of nowhere. We knew the tank would blow up. We could not wash it out.

try car-parts.com or call Lakenor / LKQ Corp (877) LKQ-CORP... They both specialize in used parts.

Rub a bar of bath soap over the hole....

I swear it's NOT a joke. Something about the soap makes it impervious to gasoline. The soap will plug the leak and it actually stays put for quite a long time. I've personally used this trick a number of times and usually carry a small bar of "hotel soap" in my toolbox just in case.

Try it! :thumb:

I did a search for "gas tank repair" in the LA area and got a hit on a place in Santa Monica.

If you have full covereage insurance on the truck, just call your agent. They'll get it fixed for ya. :cool1:

Believe it not I have a plastic welder. It's basically a soldering iron with a foot on the end of it and a hole in the foot. You use different rods (Made of plastic) for different types of plastics. After heating the welder, place on the object you need to weld and push the rod though the hole in the foot and it will melt the rod and the plastic and fuse them together.
I've used it on small gas tanks with good results.
They also claim you can fix batteries, radiators, bumpers, and anything else made of plastic.
The rods come in different colors too, black, white and clear

oh yeah. we had one of those in school. forgot all about it. doesn't work too well on radiators though so i found out . bout got my eye poked out

i bought some gas tank patch stuff from a parts store and just patched the hole with that. over six months now and no trouble cost me maybe ten bucks.

i usto use abs plastic plumbers glue on plastic repair on my motor cycle works like a champ try that.
