Working on putting 5.13s in my 14bff.

If the pattern in question is toward the heel, then you are suppose to move ring gear closer to pinion which in turn decreases backlash.
What do you do when you've moved the gear closer to get the desired pattern but now you're backlash is out of range or gone?
If you try to set the pinion further away(adding shims), then you get out of range for top to root.
This is what I'm dealing with right now. I know there is a solution....it's just my arms are tired from cranking that damn set up with the required load on it. So it's breaktime :smokin2:

Stomis, blazinzuk, 38377k5........someone? I'll post pics if needed. Please help.

The backlash can be adjusted separately from the pinion depth by changing the carrier shims. The left-side shims will adjust your backlash and you match the right-side shim (or is it adjuster on 14FF?) to get the correct carrier preload.

It's iterative because you can't check the pattern unless the BL is within spec.

:sign17: process goes: Adjust Pinion Depth > Adjust Backlash > Check Pattern > Repeat as neccessary.

If you are making dramatic enough changes that all your backlash is gone are you in the ballpark with your pinion depth?

You don't have to preload the carrier bearings every time you set back lash. I set up everything snug but not preloaded (except for the pinion bearing preload).

If you are close on your gear pattern then your backlash shouldn't change that much, if it does just readjust.

I almost ignore backlash till I am down to final setup, it has to be somewhat close but I concentrate almost entirely on the top to bottom pattern.

That help?

Agreed, but if the backlash is way out, the carrier shims will have to be adjusted before a final conclusion is made on pinion depth. If you take shim out of one side, something similar should go into the other side - or vice versa. Otherwise this shim change is almost split in half between the two carrier bearings. Then after the pattern is all good with "snug" bearings - preload the carrier and verify that it's still good.

Please post pics of your current pattern. Blazinzuk will probably tell you almost the exact shim change you need to make. Much faster than all of us splitting hairs over semantics when we have no idea where you're actually at with this.

pics get it faster for gear pattern stuff.

oh ya and this :sign6:

I knew it....but did I listen....noooooooooooooooooooo. I should have known better.....I'm sorry.....it won't happen again. :doah:

With this set-up, I'm at .004 on backlash....I started with .007 The heel reading was higher but I made the adjustment toward the pinion to make better and now I'm running out of backlash.

i am no expert only 1 set sofar. but looks to high to me.

and dont forget. 2-3 places check for backlash. then take agerage.

and when doing gear pattern check good stiff drag on the ring gear. but your pattern looks good for pressure to show pattern for reading.
