I have been chasing this heel/toe pattern all day. If I move the ring gear closer to the pinion I loose my back lash. When I put smaller shims in the pinion to get my backlash back it moves it back to the heel again. Don’t know what to do!

Whether you shim your pinion in or out, you always set backlash after with your carrier shims. You never move your pinion to adjust backlash.

So I should get a good pattern with a couple pinion shims in then pull some or put some in to get my back lash?

Yes ^ pinion needs to go in more, its on the edge of the teeth from what I can see. Get a good pattern and then set backlash. After you get a good pattern don't touch the pinion shims, use the carrier shims to set backlash.

You have to adjust your carrier shims left or right to set backlash after you move your pinion.
So say you have a .030 pinion shim in it.
Then you adjust your carrier shims to get around .006 backlash. Then check your pattern. Depending what the pattern shows you may add .010 to your pinion or subtract .010. Then you will need to readjust your carrier shims to get your backlash back to around .006 again. Then check pattern again.

Ok I am starting over with what you guys have said. I’ll let you know how it goes

Also, when you rotate the gears to get a read on the pattern be sure to have some resistance on the ring gear while it turns ( both directions) - this will make your pattern image accurate and help you determine what adjustments need to be made.

I have been doing that. I’m also using pinion bearings i honed to slide on the new pinion.

I have been working on it for 4straight hours. I will start again tomorrow and let you guys know where I get.

new or used gears ? this plays a LOT in setup and reading of the pattern . if used and only swapped carrier you should of been super close to begin with all stock parts moved over with the eaton posi swap you are doing by the looks .

Eaton Truetrac and Gm nos 3.73 gears. Not used. Original gears were 2.76 on an open carrier.

I am going to start again tomorrow but I am wondering if something is wrong. I have probably pulled it apart and put it together somewhere near 50 times with all types of shim sizes and the entire time I have had a very similar heal/toe pattern.

Move the pinion toward the carrier, if your pattern has looked like that ea time then it hasn't been moved enough. be sure to torque the carrier bearing caps ea time, and get the proper preload on the pinion bearings. Are your set up bearings new or used ?

Used set up bearings. Carrier bearings are new. I’m waiting to get everything right before I press on the new ones. Unfortunately I have caught a bug and had to leave work early yesterday and am bed ridden today. I’ll get back to you guys soon. Happy new year!

It is closer. Not a great pattern print, am guessing that needs more pressure on ring while running the pattern.
As it shows, looks a little close to the root of the ring gear, but I would expect the back lash to tighter.
If you can find a helper have them hold the carrier with a wrench on a ring bolt, while you use a socket and bar on the pinion, or vis versa.
Hope you feel better soon

You know what’s weird is that was with 0.056 shims on the pinion. Now I have every shim I have and it looks like this(.100) worth of shims.image.jpgimage.jpg
