Looking for some opinions on what is a good gear ratio for a rock crawler mostly driven off road but occasionally on road to the trail etc. Running a small block 350, 700r4, d60, 14ff 42" tires and eventually a 203/205 doubler.

If you had a doubler I'd say 4.56 but since you don't I'd go with 5.38's.

Now your cooking with peanut oil:waytogo: thanks for the reply.

I had a truck on 44s with a 305 th400 and 205 with 456s and it had all the power i could ask for never bogged down on me and that was a dd toy mix i would say it was a close to stock if not better feel with 456 gears

if overdrive go as deep as possbile basicly . 5.13 be easy to do . 5.38 require little work in housing to run .

the reason for deep is the overdrive will hunt / cycle in-out a lot if gear is to high / highway friendly.

but if off road or intown mostly and doubler later 4.10 or 4.56 be fine as the doubler will make it up big time.

I agree with the above statement. Since you are running a 700r4 trans with OD go as deep as you can, so 5.13 or 5.38. If you only go 4.56 axle gears with 42's the OD gear in the trans will be completely useless.

if you got it use it .

i did 5.13 and 4l80-e so i could cruse highway at 65 and 2100-2200 rpm . :thumb: on 38" tires.

I agree with 5.38. If you are going to spend the $$$$$ may as well make it count. I would have gone 5.38s with 42s without overdrive.

I'm going to run 5.38s with the same combo you have based on everyone's recommendations here. I'm only running 40s when done, but it should still be a pretty good match with the 42s.

I haven't done the gears in the 14BFF yet, so I don't know how much work the housing will need. From what these guys had to say when I asked, it apparently isn't that big of a deal to do. Dremel type work.
