i have a 350/dm465/np205 and im currently running 35"tires and going up to around 38s, will 4.56 gears be enough for weekend offroading and dding? if not what should i look into.

i use to run 38" on 1ton with 4" lift 2" body and 4.10 gears 350 tbi 4 speed. had to use 1st more but did good i think. back to 35" as more daily driver work truck and sold 38" for good deal.

you never here about my gears are to steep only they are not enough, my opinion i would get 4.88 you will eventually want bigger tires so gear now for them.

well im still planning on buying that d70 from you with the 4.56s so unless you got something we can work out i guess im gonna have to go with those for now.

With 38" tires your 4.56 axle would act like you had a 3.19 rear axle. Your truck would be very sluggish to accelerate unless you actually used 1st gear (most people don't ) and it would probably be terrible off road. However it would probably get 4 more mpg on the street.
If you had a friend who had 38"tires and the same rims try them on your truck. I have heard that 38"'tires are hard on rear axle bearings, steering and braking. The mass of tire would be difficult to start rolling and stop rolling. If you have a 1/2 ton truck the 38's may make the truck wander left and right.
The bottom line is 35" tires may be the biggest tires the truck can safely handle.

I'm running a 1987 2500 with a tbi350 on sm465 & np208 with stock gears and 36" tires. I had 265's on before and I noticed a big difference in weight through the clutch and starting in "real" first (not granny low). I've used granny low to start but only up hill or if traffic is real slow going. I haven't gone highway yet but I'm pretty happy with it around town still. I am tossing around the idea of going bigger gears (as my stock 14bolt needs a new breather) but I too am unsure of what size to go to. 4.10's I've seen alot here in BC.

I dont have a d70 wish i did if i did i would not be selling it, im in oc if ya want a ride in a 465 205 truck on 42 with 4:11 or 4:56 stock and it aint enough, i had 39.5 iroks before the 42 iroks. It had a 350 smog motor in it with a edelbrock intake and holley, it ran good, swapped to a mid big block runs better especially on the freeway but i want mid 5.38 gearing atleast. if you are looking for 3/4 ton axles ill sell mine as i want a d60 and d 70 for lower geering, what i would sell rear 14 bolt full float gov lock front 10 bolt open warn hubs both work great and i just changed the fluid got 1 mile on the oil both have no issues.
