I know the subject has been discussed countlessl times, so please forgive me for the repeat question. I'll try to be specific.

Who out there runs a 700r4 with 4.10 gears and 38" tires. I'm trying to decide wether to run the truck as is, or to wait untill I can afford to go to 5.13 or 5.38's.

I have a BTO stage 3 without the manual valve body. Dana 60 and 14ff. Both axles are locked with Lock-Rites.

I would like to drive the truck sooner than later, and I won't have the money for gears till at least next year.

I do have a manual lockup wired for the tranny, though it should lock up the TC even in 2nd and 3rd.

So, my question for those out there running a similar set up, Do you see any reason I may hurt my tranny just driving in 3rd instead of overdrive untill I can afford to gear it properly.

Again, sorry for the possible repost. I appreciate all thoughts on this.

Thanks,
UDY

I have the same gear/tranny combo but w/ 37's. I plan on running in Drive only till I re-gear. Overdrive would kill the tranny quick.

Thanks for replying, I think the actuall measurement is about 37". Not exactly sure, but they are on 10" wide rims instead of 12". BTW, they are 38.5x15.5r16.5 Super Swamper Radials.

How is the "performance"? I have a stock 5.7 with 160,000 mi. Burns oil on startup, but doesn't go through much. I'm assuming it'll be a dog unless I'm in low range.

Only "test" drove it once. It took off alright due to the low first gear of the 700R4. I don't expect a lot my 350 has 209,00mi on it.

same set up but with a th400. i been running 38s and 373s for about 6 years so the 4.10s is a bit of a improvement. everything seems to work fine for me

Thanks guys, just don't want to damage my tranny. I want to drive my truck!

There shouldn't be any issue with running the tranny in 3rd. I had the exact same setup for years and while it was not a daily driver it did do several 3-4 hour round trips to the trail on the freeway.

I know you have the diesel, but what kind of RPM's did you turn. I've looked at the charts for both 3rd and OD. Just looking for something real world.

Thanks again to all for your replies!!!

Thanks, ultimately would like 5.13 or 5.38.No way to afford it right now. Any money is going toward a 241sye and cross over steering and brace. Then driveshafts and rear discs. Next year hopefullly gears and a selectavle locker for the front!

Even with a 700r4? I don't plan on going larger than 38's. Once my radial Swampers wear out, I'd like to go with old school Ground Hawgs.

I do appreciate your input. I will run it as is for now. My original thoughts were to go with 4.88, but after searching these threads, my understanding was that still may be too high. The truck will be a daily driver as long as there is no snow on the roads, but would still like to have a capable off-roader. Around here, it's mostly mud and woodsy trails, but I have a brother in law in Fort Collins that goes to Moab, with a family friend, on occasion. A dream vacation for me would be to take a month off, and drive out there to do some wheeling. Probably wouldn't do too much extreme stuff, but would love to do some trails out there in the wilderness.

So back to the original subject, 4.88's, in your opinion would be a better all around gear ratio? If so, my understanding is the 4.88's will work in the 14ff and use the same Lock-Rite, and the D60 will need a new carrier, but I can still use the Lock-Rite that is already installed with the 4.10's, just change gears and carrier?

I ran radial 33x12.50 and 35x12.50 mud-terrains, 13/38 Swampers (short for a 38 and skinny), and now 39.5x15 Swampers all on the same setup regarding engine/trans/gears.

4.10's were perfect with the 33's and TH700r4, around 1,900 rpm at 65 mph. 35's weren't bad.

The 38's and 4.10's made OD basically useless unless on perfectly flat ground going 65+ mph...the rpm "only" dropped to maybe 1,700 rpm but the bias Swampers were heavier and had a lot more rolling resistance than the radials.

I think I tried OD once with the 39.5's at 55 mph (rarely street drive it anymore) and it struggled to just hold speed, though in D it feels fine.

5.13's with the 700r4 and 38's would put rpm in the 2,100 rpm range at 65 mph which I would think should work good with heavy bias 38's.

With 35s and 2.73 gears, my 6.2L diesel wouldn't hold speed in O/D going down a hill... NV3500 transmission btw

My 38's are Swamper Radials, I kinda figured OD to be useless unless I was on the highway at 75mph or so. Anything less than that I will just use 3rd. I think OD will make way to much heat, not to mention shifting back and forth all the time.

Thanks again for all the insight guys, it is appreciated!
