Was making a trip to see a friend and went to downshift from 5th to 4th. tranny is now stuck in 4th. Anyone have any idea on how to fix it without pulling the tranny and tearing it apart. Thanks.

Those things have a complicated shift rail setup in it... Any number of things to go wrong and make it stick in a gear. You can pull the shift tower off it and take a look and see if anything is obvious right at the top, but it won't be like an SM465 where you went between shift gates or something.

I tried that last night. Im working on getting it out now so I can pop the tranny apart. I know the 3-4 shift fork is in the front. Hopefully I can fix it easily. if not I will just stick the NV4500 in it from my other project.

its normally the top plate...and remember to overfill it 1 quart...

Does any one know how to get the case apart. I can only get it to come apart about a half inch or so. I have a manual and it says to remove the shift shaft detent plug. I have no clue what it is talking about.

Got it apart and shifted into neutral. Nothing looks messed up to me.

Ok I got it apart and found the problem. The shift collar bolt came loose. Put some locktite on it and stuck it together.

How'd you get the transmission halves separated? I tried once but couldn't figure it out

There is a little plug toward the front and on the side that has to come out. Then a spring and a hollow tube. Hardest part is getting the plug out.
