Getting A Zirk Fitting To Take Grease

This may be a simple question with a simple answer but... does anyone else have issues with getting zirk fittings to take grease? It seems like some will take it fine and others will come right back out of the fitting. With the cost of johnny joints and grease being what they are, I would like to make sure the grease goes where it supposed to. If anyone has any tips on how accomplish this process, it would be appreciated.
 
easy.... go to autozone and buy a kit of them... and just replace them... that is what we did on my buddies blazer.... cheap and easy and no d1ckin with the old rusty ones...
 
I agree! Its much simpler then tryin to heat them up a bit and cranking away on the grease gun
 
Thanks for the quick replies. The zirk fittings are new. 2 out of the 6 took grease. I also tried a new grease gun fitting. I would like to hear more about the heating them up method. Does that make the grease flow better?
 
wow they are new.... the basics are the grease pushes the lil ball in and allows grease to flow in... if the grease does not go in that would appear the ball is stuck... even if they are new they may still be binding up.
 
They have that zinc coating on them as well. Maybe the ball needs to be freed up. I will check it out. Thanks.
 
We used to do it on Terragators the Zerks would become rusted and the grease would get somewhat old and hard.

Although we also used a Lincoln Electric Grease Gun
 
I've pulled zerks and soaked with wd 40 to loosen old grease on shafts and such without bearings. On the farm we have a setup you put grease in place it on the zerk and rap it with a hammer. Works good, but I try to refrain from using it on threaded zerks.

If it is something like a greasable bushing bolt for your leaf springs, try rotating the bolt. If the exit hole on the bolt is in such a position that the vehicle wieght is on it you will not get grease in it. I had to rotate one of mine to get it to take grease from the start.

precisely exactly.........what he just said. move the joint around that you are trying to grease and see how that goes. or unload the joint totally on a jack.
 
Maybe too easy of an answer, but make sure the grease gun fitting is on the zerk good. I have to give it a little force sometimes for it to "seat". then the zerks seem to take grease fine.
 
Thanks for all the replies. One of them is bound to work. I am starting to think it is the grease gun itself. Can anyone recommend a good quality grease gun.
 
some times i poke the little ball with a pick tool or small nail just the get the ball moving, so i know it's not seized up.

sometimes, with weather and stuff, they'll kind of rust shut a bit, but after you poke em, they work fine.
