Looking for anyone with experience before I tear back into the column.

Situation: 1984 K5 with wipers on the column. Automatic trans (shifter on column, too). Been running the truck fine for 3 years. Rewired the whole truck during first build, including new wiper switch, turn signal cam/switch, yada...yada. Wipers work when I turn them on and shut off when I ask. Recently lost 4th gear and decided to build my own transmission. Installed the new one and went to test pressures for TV cable adjust. When shifting down to 1st gear to test that pressure (first time I've ever needed to do that), wipers activated. Not in any other gear. Shifted out of gear, turned the knob to mist...went away after a few wipes. Tried again to see if it was an anomaly. Nope. Shifted from 2nd to 1st...wipers activated right away.

Tore column apart. Cannot see any exposed/bare wires on the wiper switch wire ribbon. It must be on the cabin-side of the firewall, because the Painless Wiring fuse-block portion to the engine bay runs all wiper-related wires on the driver-side of the block directly to the motor, meaning none of the wires comes remotely close to any of shifter mechanism. All my wires are still tucked away from the mechanism in the engine bay...and all lights/lockup/etc function as expected.

Kinda lost here. Don't see exposed wires. Not sure how the shift mechanism in the column could ground out the switch to activate the wipers, but it does...every time I try to shift to 1st. Any ideas?

I honestly don't remember for sure, but I believe that my '90 had a similar problem and the fix was the wiper motor.
Mine didn't have a certain set circumstance that made it trigger, though.
I had a few spare pulse modules, switches and motor to play parts swap with though.

i would just try throwing a new delco switch at it.. it may not be an "exposed" wire, but something just getting pressure on it from the shifter position...
