Looking at getting a plasma cutter. I was originally looking at the name brands Hypertherm in general but then I stumbled across the GIANT TECH 50a (china made). Fraction of the cost but big enough for a lot of jobs. Seems like guys on Pirate and other forums are happy with it. Anyone here tried one? The dealer is fairly local to me which is also a piece of mind. I'm a hobbiest like most up here so I won't be using it day to day. Sure I'd like the name brand model but it comes down to say $1500 vs $400. If I fabricated for a living my decision would be different of course. I have a monster set of torches for anything this can't handle but they cost $$ to run on the lighter stuff. I've looked and looked and I can't even touch a used name brand for the price. Even if I could a consumable like the Hypertherm torch costs more than this unit new. Any thoughts?

All i can offer is don't skimp out on tools. You get what you pay for. Sure the cheaper brand might work ok or even good but for how long? I always like to buy brand name tools for piece of mind and knowing that they've been around a long time with excellent results. I can totally understand not wanting to spend alot of $$$ on a tool that you won't use but occasionally but IMO it's not worth the risk involved.

Any thoughts on the Longevity brand units offered on Pirate? They start at $400 + free shipping.

It has a better warranty than hypertherm, miller, esab, or hobart. Can't see the risk in that?

No argument there. I generally buy the best of the best. But very simply, for $1500 or more I will have to go without a plasma unless a find a decent deal on a used one. Playing devils advocate I could buy 3-4 Chinese ones for the same price...that gives me a full 12yr warranty. Maybe I'm just trying to talk myself into the fact that my budget only allows for the China made one but I've seen it work and it cuts as good as any other.

There was another plasma/tig/arc welder that was talked about a couple of years back, and there were stories of just generally cheap design...boards burning up, bad torches, etc. Performance was fine for what it was designed for, just fairly consistent failures.

I suppose that's what you can expect when buying cheap chinese stuff, as long as you can afford to have the downtime while they repair it I think it would be acceptable. Sending stuff back can get expensive, so that's gotta be figured into acquisition as well.

As little as I use most of my stuff, I think I'll be going the path of a cheap plasma myself, curious to hear your results or any others you hear of. I expect about the same...fairly decent results from most people, with failures from others. It's fairly likely that the same factory/company turns out these as past units, and having learned from previous designs, continually improve them.

I've seen it with other chinese products, and the saying for cars used to (maybe still do) be...don't buy the first year of a brand new design. :) If the lineage of this model can be traced to another previous design, it's probably been improved.

i highly recommend Parker's...

x2 i have their plasma tech 50dv and it works great.

I have a Parker plasma cutter. I have been happy with it. I can't see spending a whole lot of money for an occasional use machine.

They advertise that they do "extra" work on the internals to make it a little better. One advantage for me is that they are local.

Yes, I had quite a few other auctions started but got bad news today concerning my new shipment of machines. Seems US Customs wants to take a closer look at the every thing that's in the container my machines are also in. So that will delay my stock for another week . But I don't really mind too much seeing that they are doing their job to keep us all a little safer
Thank you for the welcome!

Bought one off of ebay yesterday. Anxiously awaitng arrival.

And now I have to get another bottle of gas for the tig.:doah: That makes 4 bottles of gas purchased in the last 6 weeks. Good thing my wife doesn't know what these tanks cost.

I will give a full performance review when it arrives.
