Glorified Grocery Getter Build- WARN Premiums and Dual Battery Mock Up and Boxes

Chris, thanks for the props. :D Now onto your questions.

As for SSA, I rate their products very highly. Everything I have used is as advertised and does exactly what they claim. The only reason I did the roof first was that I had to replace my headliner anyway and because as you guessed I wanted some extra insulation to protect me from the AZ sun. I think treating the roof did make a slight improvement in heat and sound dampening. Obviously the greatest improvement for sound would be from the firewall, doors, and floor. My plan for the floor is to first hit it with some rust bullet for insurance (spectrum is a waterbased product filled with rust inhibitors), followed by Damp Pro, and then spectrum or spectrum firewall 3-4mm thick. After that I'll either follow with herc or replacement rubber mat. If you plan on doing herculiner and want to be able to hear anything in your truck besides road and engine noise I would suggest using spectrum under the herc or using sprectrum as an undercoating. Herculiner has almost no sound dampening effect, so if you take out all your carpet and mat that's about what your truck will sound like after only herc. Oh, and painting the roof just might help a little, I have thought about it (great minds think alike :wink1:), esp in between the ridges on the roof, I'll probably try it out before I get a new paint job.

As for the battery, for your diesel, you need it wired in parallel to get started, but for us gassers wiring in parallel gives us the least amount of options and protection. When you wire in parallel you are essential making one big battery. You can't jump start yourself, charge one battery at a time, or keep from draining both batteries at the same time. Most people install a second battery as insurance for jump starts and to help run things with high draw like winches, elec fans, welders, stereos. Running batteries in parrallel won't accomplish any of these things, you'll just turn over the engine easier. There are many different systems out there that use isolators, solenoids, or ACRs to get similar results, but each had it's pros and cons. If you search for the dual battery thread, esp the ones that ryoken has contributed to you'll find a lot of valuable info. Being a diesel, you can add a third and even fourth battery! Or maybe just two higher rated batteries :dunno:, ryoken would know. :wink1:

I'll be watching for you to start your build. Let me know if I can help with any more info.

Thanks. i wish i could start next weekend but i have a ten month old and a prego wife due in about a month or two, so most of my time is spent baby sitting and wife sitting.

I look foward to getting all the help i can though.

Sounds like you've got your hands full, congrats! You're making the right choice spending time with your wife and kids. The burb will still be there later. I was actually prego when I bought my burb and now he's three so doing any work on the burb is usually a challenge. We're trying to get a house that we can put a fence around the whole yard so while I'm working in the garage or driveway he can't get away. ;)

Nothing new. It's hotter than heck here right now (110+) so I'm not doing anything. We thought we had a contract on another house with a bigger yard and driveway, which would better facilitate working on the burb with the kids, but our loan fell through. :( As for being worth it, I don't know really. If you value every degree then yes, but it is a lot to spend for results that don't cure the problem. I'd have to move somewhere cooler to solve the problem. :)

you know i have been thinking about the insulation thing. my burb isnt working right now and even if it were the A/C wouldnt be. . .

i dont know how much space is between the headliner and the roof but have you considered using the "Great Stuff" expanding foam insulation? I was thinking about it for the roof and fenders. . . once it expanded you could shape it with a cheese grater. . .

I bet that would help some. maybe ill try it out one day when i get money.

Just a warning, I've heard that foam is problematic to use in an auto applications because it is open cell and can absorb water from the air or if there is a small leak somewhere in your sheetmetal then hold the water against your sheetmetal causing premature rusting. I haven't used it personally, but have read reports of this happening repeatedly. Research for yourself, but if you plan on keeping your burb for a long time I wouldn't risk it. ;)

good call, didnt think if that. :(

i was also looking at some RV type air conditioners for the burb. They make some that are smaller. something like "slimline"

anyways, you could paint it to match and people might think its one of those nifty satellite dishes. . . lol

then you could keep the burb @ about 65 degrees all summer.

just a thought. I think think the cheapest one is something like $150 on JCWhitney.

Look at a rear unit out of a Chevy full size van too. Can get one from a junk yard and they should be extremely parts compatible with your Suburban.

I just had one put into an 18 wheeler day cab to replace an extremely poor factory a/c. Works like a charm and looks good. Sorry, no pics, already ran it back to where it came in from.

wait chevy conversion vans had stand alone A/C units? could you elaborate? I dont know anything about this at all.

i would love to know more.

Nice write up, I'm intregued by all the solenoids, can you explain more on what you have going on there?

Looks like a really fun build, looking good. One thing I've been considering, and I don't know if you've thought about it - doing a tropical roof mod. I'm really considering it, and it's something that's got to be designed before the exo goes onto my truck, but I think the benefits outweigh the problems. Ever thought about going that route?

Take a look at old land rovers and TLC's - some of the ones used in deserts and other sunny areas had a complete other roof over the regular one, with about a one inch air gap. Everyone used to call them a tropical roof, 'least that's what I can recall.

white top

mini mull read through your build looks really nice big compliments on the headliner! in regards to temperatures and colors, i haul frac sand in the gas field out here and sometimes we get really bored waiting to get unloaded. one of these times somebody found an infrared temperature gun to play with and we found out that the lighter colored rigs and hard hats were alot cooler than the darker colored ones that were on that location. iwant to say that it was more than just 10-20 degrees, but can't remember. i've thought about working in a white top into the color scheme of my burb for that reason, but instead of paint i want to have it linex'd so luggage isn't scratching it up or anything. any way just a thought let me know what you think.

I know. I'm a looser, but I'm not holding out on you guys. There really there hasn't been anything to update since my last post. Life has gotten in the way. I'm hoping to get back to work on the burb this spring.
Tank, I've thought about spraying the roof white, just haven't done it yet. Why don't you try it out and let us know how it goes. Many of the 67-72 burbs and blazers have white tops. Safari tops would be cool, but definately beyond my sheetmetal skill level.

I know it works, I had that done on my custom VAN, I did silver which actually works better than white even.
