All right, I've been running a 6.2 in a DD for 6 years now and I've gotten pretty familiar with the various things that need doing now and then, plus the best 'brands' or items to replace things with.

One item I'm still very unsatisifed with is glow plugs. I'll list off the common ones that either i know of or have used, and what my issue is with them.

9G, 11G, 13G...factory glow plugs for the various years and electrical systems. Fast glow, marginal longevity, tips swell when they burn out.

AC60G, Autolite 1110...basically the same glow plug. Longevity is decent, tips don't swell but glow time is long to get them hot enough. Best with a manual set-up.

Quick heats...fast glow time, so they work good with factory controllers. Tips don't swell so that's good. They'd be ideal except the don't F'in last. I'm down to 4 or 5 working quick heats (second set in less than two years).

So, if anyone can add to the list with pros and cons please do so. I'm not gonna waste another cent on Kennedy's snake oil GP's. Also, if anyone knows a laymans method to prolonging factory glow times with a resistor please post up as this makes the AC60G and the Autolite 1110 a lot more attractive.

I run 60g glow plugs in my 80 with a manual controlled setup in it. I typically glow the plugs for 12 - 15 seconds before I hit the key. Even at -20F, my engine fires up almost immediately, though it does miss on a few cylinders for a couple seconds and smokes until the engine warms up a bit.

I also run 60g plugs in my 86 with the factory electronic controller (85+ IIRC), and have always found that the glow time is too short on it, only about 6 seconds. I did some research and found that if you install a 10 ohm, 2 watt resistor in the wire that enters terminal "C" on the controller, it increases the glow time to between 12 - 16 seconds which is perfect for a 60g glow plug. I plan on installing my resistor on Wednesday afternoon before I try firing up the new engine.

The reason the 9g, 11g, etc glow fast is the fact that they are rated for 6V not 12V. I believe the 60g's to be 12V but not sure on that. I'd go with the 60g's and a manual button knowing that they last a long time and don't swell.

I heard the same thing about the resistor, I have seen a post here where a guy listed two values for a resistor and for each how much more time you get.
I'll try and search for it.

You had the first reply on this thread :D :haha:

Posts: 25,859...like i can remember what i posted in '07. :haha:

Anyways, bear in mind I have the older glow plug controller (83) and I specifically do not want a manual set-up because my wife occasionally drives this thing. It's also way too 'clean' to start modifying with holes in the dash and stuff.

Sorted through and tested my collection of old quick heats...found 6 good ones. Gonna work my way through my collection first while continuing the research into a better GP option for me.

Ah the old round GP controler?
Yeah I had the same one in my van, I was contemplating getting a newer style and adapting it to my truck.

Well crap. I bought the kennedy's as everyone on the diesel page praised them. I'll give em' a whirl and go with the 60's with the inline resistor if they don't last. Did you call kennedy? His customer service is supposed to be really good.:dunno:

When I asked about mine he claimed they are killed by cycling the plugs after the truck starts when the voltage jumps to 14.5V from 12V... I don't think he really knows how they are supposed to work.

However, I believe he will still replace them under warranty as long as you hang onto your reciepts.

Anybody know if Wellman makes a 12v plug or not? I like the ones in Big Ugly but all I've ever seen by them are CUCV and HMMWV specific.

Duh, yeah...but isn't that still different from the civy trucks?

The pick-up came with the "Quick heats" which were pretty new. Then I bought a full new set from Dremu...so no receipts to work with unfortunately.

I am sure Aaron would have kept the reciept, did you ask him?

No i didn't...and frankly even if he did i wouldn't send em back for warranty because at best I'd get another set.

Yeah I hear you.
I am not the typ e to use any warranty, that is why I don't keep the reciepts, if I get a bad item I don't ever use them again, that is how I am .
I still believe the AC60G's are the answer too and we probably can experiment with the resistor values, we have 2 now one that makes the total 12 sec, and the other 22, we need a value in the middle, I have to go back and read the values and we should make this work.

No...I know there's one AC plug they specifically mention NOT to use as the CUCV's system will "overpower it".

It's over on SS somewhere. You and I aren't popular there now though.:D

It is probably a 6V glowplug then... the resistance would be different in the convoluted CUCV glowplug system. You can put the 12V CUCV glowplug in a Civi truck and it will work fine, just take longer to heat up.

I will only use AC 60G's. I have an Autolite 1110 that I bought at NAPA so I could CC my heads. Just out of curiosity I hooked it up to 12V and let her glow. Within 15 seconds the tip had swollen enough that it was impossible to install in the heads.

Of course, to be fair I haven't tried this with 60G's... maybe 15 seconds of glow will swell them up too :dunno:
