GM Assembly Line Workers Grease Pencil Notations

I have been tearing my old square body 4X4 crew cab truck down to the smallest pieces lately, and noticed white grease pencil markings all over it from GM assembly line workers. The grease pencil marking of "40" is all over it...from the frame, to the glove box, and the firewall. Is anybody familiar with what these grease pencil markings mean?

Pictures?

Probably nothing honestly, I work in an automotive assembly plant and if you tore one of those cars down looking for paint marks or oil pencil writing it'd drive you crazy. Pretty much the unseen side of most parts or panels have some form of mark on them.

It's either a quality check, a repair was made and double checked, or some job that was normally done by a machine that was done by hand.

I believe the 40 was the vehicle number as it went down the line...in the Corvette world they would write the car number (not related to vin at all) on different places to id parts and insure they were all on the correct car.

My car was #436....from what I've read they started at 01 and went to 999 then started over again.

Sounds like a fun ride.....a 67 would have had the 427. No wonder it was a beast!
396 was a 65 only for the Vette.

what a great ride! funnernhell!

That 40 means you have too much time on your hands or you are my neighbor Bob who mows his lawn daily.
