What do y'all think of this one ?? When I get tired of the 305 in the El Camino, I might get one. Think it might be cheaper then building a 350.

When the times comes, I just want a engine in the 300 horse range, and 290 is damn close. Yeah, the price is good too. I think Jeg's has the same engine for a few bucks less.

GM motors are awesome, good bang for the buck with a good warranty. Unfortunately I might hafta put a new one in my truck before I leave Va and if I do its going to be a GM motor. Only 249hp but I'll squeeze in a few more :D
Gettin one from the dealership is good becuase theres no shipping fees and they are soemtiems in stock.

So if I started with 350cid / 290hp long block and use my Dart "Kool Can" dual plain air gap intake manifold and a 600cfm Holley, and say a set of Hooker Headers and 2.5" duel exhaust, do you think I'd gain any horse over the 290 HP that's advertised ??

From what I've read, GM's power numbers on their crate motors are a little conservative, especially on the high-performance motors. Wouldn't surprise me if you saw 300-teens if you dyno'd that combo. Even more if you did a cam swap that was well-matched to the intake & heads. But a cam swap would kill the GM warranty IIRC....

I was thinking of waiting till the warranty runs out befor doing anything like a cam swap. Just wouldn't want too do anything too void the warranty.

thats the one i have in my jimmy its been in there for about 6 yrs great motor runs nice an smooth the only problem i had with mine is that the oil pan had prevsions on both sides of the pan for a dip stick when i needed a new gasket i had to peice one together no one in town could find a one peice seal with dipstick detents or what ever you want to call them on both sides im not sure if mine was special or if they are all like that

Hello,
I have 350 4 bolt crate engine. I love it I have only put 15,000 mils on it. It runs like a champ. with a new 2.5" exhaust, edelbrock 600 CFM, edelbrock EPS intake, and a edelbrock 13" by 3" breather seating on the carb I believe my engine is pushing around 285-300HP.
Thanks
Adam

what he said...

does it come with forged pistons?

after your warranty runs out and you got some $$$ bolt up some dart heads for 1200$ and watch the hp jump to 360.

i think thats a great choice. killer deal for all new components. but didnt you want to build a high rpm screamer for that elC?i thought i remembered you saying you want something that can run at 5000+rpms for extended amounts of time. i dont think the components in this mill are beefy enough for that.

What I want and what is more practical are 2 different things. The more I think about it, the more I've toned it down. Heck, the El Camino is just going too be a street car. Something for crusin, not racing. I'll be really happy with something in the 300 hp range.

Thats the one I looked at. Good stuff. I think I'm gonna rock the 290 with some goodies and just leave the block alone.

welcome to my world:D its fun to dream for awhile tho right?
300hp is plenty healthy unless your racing for money.

Yeah. The El Camino is just going too be a street toy. Something for crusin' the strip on Cruse nights, taking drives in the hills, taking to car shows, (Not entered, but what I'll drive to and from) and the occational road trip. I'm getting older, and don't need to race everything in sight. The importent things for me anymore are working heat and A/C, good handling, and some tunes. I just want a good running car that's fun too drive, and looks good. Something somewhat classic.
