"Goober's Garage" K20 Build

ya i never planned on driving it in the winter. i'm kinda glad it's working out this way by putting the 355 in this truck. i was getting tired of it in the red truck. red truck needs some more go. going to go with a forged 383 kit and buy a matching GM Performance "fast burn" head to the one i got already. i get everything for 10% over cost at work so i'll save some cash that way. can you say aluminum "vortec" style headed, forged 383? oh yeah!

Motor build sounds good for red truck but don't you think you'd be further ahead with money, reliability, and maybe even power with a 6.0 or 5.3 swap? I do love my 400 but could have swapped some modern muscle for cheaper.

i've thought about it but as of right now i'd like to build a motor for it over the winter/spring and my uncle (retired engine builder/mechanic) wants me to build one for it ( it was his dads truck). maybe in a few years after i graduate college i'll gather the stuff to put a 6.0 in it.

holy shat it rolls :woot:and i remembered to snap a few pics. got it all mocked up for now, axles are done minus front pads and calipers. still need zero rates for the front and kurts top spring plates, then it'll all be tightened down for good till its all together i have put pinion shims in the front. what a relief to have this thing at least a rolling chassis

thanks, the single bay side is used to store stuff like the lamn mower. i work out of the big door, benches on the left wall and tool boxes on the back wall. only thing i would change is the height and add a hoist....

Looks great Paul!!! Ready for silver lake almost  :D

i wish! it'll be a while... i'm done with my summer classes mid august, then i go back to work at the dealership full time. can't wait to make that money, its the american dream right ?

i've got an idea for the front spring hangers to correct my shackle angle, pinion angle and get an inch or so of lift. gunna wait to see how it turns out or if i'm even going to follow through with it before i go into the details...

p.s. just put an order into kurt!

I have an extra set of zero rates if you want them.

Probably need new centering pins

when I was working at gm they would have a sheet that came out every so often with engines, transmissions that they were discontinuing. Some times you could get a 5.3 or 6.0 pretty cheap. They were line engines so they came with intakes, injectors etc and were brand new. Should see if your parts dept can watch out for you. I was always looking for 8.1s and 454s. I know we bought a line 5.3 and it was cheaper than a goodwrench engine.

engine cross member is in, as well as ez inch installed in the front and axle moved 1.5 forward, and kerts top plates. thought i could salvage my front spring hangers and body mounts but they are just too gone, so i am making new ones that incorperated the spring mount and body mount in one similiar to kerts B52 hangers. more on that to come but i am lowering the front hanger by about an inch to tip the pinion up a tad and also moving the springs back about 3/4" of an inch to correct the shackle angle, so the axle will be about 1/2 " or so forward from stock location.( yes i realize there is no weight on it right now and there new springs )

it should work out pretty slick in the end. should also allow me to run a tad longer shackle in the back as well. if i mess anything up kerts plain weld on spring hangers im using have four holes in them so i can move the axle around to tune in the shackle angle if i foook it up to bad :D im confident it'll be fine tho

also got a set of rear shock mounts for in boarding the rear shocks, going to fab up my own upper cross member to mount to. my shock tabs on my 14 were rotted thru so i figured i might as well inboard them while im fixing it.

thanks again tracy for the great customer service!

thanks! the rolling chassis is almost done. can't wait to set the body on this thing

i think i'm going to tie the two hangers together with some tubing just to sturdy things up, witht the hanger being lowered a little bit i think it puts a little more stress on the frame

I'd put something under them frame rails welded to your spring mounts. Right now all of your upward force is put on a shear plane taken by your bolts only. Eventually it will egg out all the holes and shear them bolts. I cant even imagine how that would affect driving at any kind of speed.

Looks great otherwise and one h3ll of a project going on:waytogo:

thanks shady thats exactly what i was thinking :waytogo: maybe even throw a bolt in the new added piece bolting it to the bottom lip of the frame, wouldn't hurt...

yeah I'd put 2 in actually. Nice work on that mount too:waytogo:
