Good all around tire

Well, he's asked variations of this same question many times over the last 6 months. Always gets the same answers too.

well the whole sand thing just came to mind, and I figure that a Mud tire wouldnt do go in sand so I had ask since I have been told for Sand non agressive is the best. So and Like I said I might be moving out west in a couple of years and if i spend like $600 on tires it seems to be a waste if they are only good in mud and there is no more mud. So If you guys want me to stop these Threads Let me know and i will shut the hell up.

Thats fine, they`re still good on the road:wink1:

Mud tires tend to dig but width and floation help. If you can spin them, and you should with the 4.56's and your engine, they tend to act a bit like paddles. Lots of guys run muds and more extreme tires over at the Silver Lake Dunes. Just air down and throttle...

Heck, AT's are cheap. Buy the muds now and when you actually end up out there pick a set up cheap used.

Well I could keep my Kelly's that are on the truck now they do OK in the Sand even in 2 wheel drive. I think I Will just buy some MT's this spring and stop makin these thread.

I was lookin at you cardomian Page and I see You had a Ranger, so I will ask you this

I found about a 89' Ranger extended cab , 6 cylinder, 5 speed, 4X4, The Cab is pretty much rust free, but the bed sides are really rotted, its got newer 33X12.50X15 Mud Kings, I dont think its lifter cause the front fenders where pretty hacked out. The Price Is $650

Whatch think?

That's exactly what I'd do. Get a new set of wheels for the MT's and just keep the AT's around for sand use or long trips.

Oy, well, first off here goes:

www.TheRangerStation.com
They've got a nice tech library on the main page that should really help you educate yourself about them if you want to look into this, or others, more.

Sorta like the CK5 of Ford Rangers and that platform.

89...don't remember if they had the 4.0L V6 that year...thinking not...think '90 was the first year of the 4.0L. It's probably a 2.9L V6 which isn't a powerhouse and had head issues. Crappy gaskets like all the manufacturers were fighting with back then. If it's a good running engine though there's nothing wrong with one. Mazda 5 speed which is a good tranny, liked mine in my '96. The rear axle should be a 7.5" which is nothing special but up to the task of 33's. Might have one of their limited slips which are head and shoulders above the Grenade Lock but by this time, unless someone's rebuilt it, probably isn't much good. The front however...Dana 28 TTB...POS. Guys blow them up with 31's.

I got my '96 because by '93 the new body style came in and they were mostly the beefier parts. Bigger wheel wells meant 31's fit stock, the 4.0L which is a truly great engine was an option, good 5 speed, 8.8" rear on the 4.0L models, Dana 35 TTB front on most of the 4x4's and all the 4.0L 4x4's...good solid building platforms. My needs (and wants) just got too big for my little Ranger. Wish I could have kept it but I drive Big Ugly infrequently enough as it is.
Avoid like the plague any Ranger with an automatic.
Also don't expect great gas mileage. With my 4.0L, 4.56 gears, manual tranny, and 33's I only ever managed about 16mpg at best and regularly saw about 14.5.
Unless it's been well kept the front end might be an issue as well. TTB works pretty well when properly maintained and modified but a lot of folks let them deteriorate and then that's where their bad reputation came in. We replaced the front wheel bearings, seals, and races, the ball joints, the coil springs, and installed alignment cams and mine was straight as an arrow down the road and handled SOOO much better than when I first got it. The tires sat crooked simply from all the loose front end components!

I used to run nothing but BFG's. I had a set of BFG AT's on the Bronco for daily driving and swapped in a set of MT's for offroad. The AT's wore poorly and handling was just OK.
Wow, never heard a complaint about how BFG AT's wear before. Of course Ford TTB don't do much for tire wear usually.

My BFG AT's wear very well. I had 32's on my K5 for years. Now there is another set of 32's on my dad's Jeep. I run BFG AT's on my work truck too and I logged about 55,000 miles on the last set.

I sold mine before they wore too much so I didn't see it on my rig. However, I had a couple of friends who ran them pretty much only on the street and had a lot of cupping after a while. They also had to keep on the inflation to make sure it was always just right or the tread wore unevenly in the center. I did like the fact that the BFG AT was a lot more aggressive than the Desert Dueler AT that I run on my SUV. But, the Desert Dueler also rides very quiet and a variance in inflation doesn't seem to cause too many problems.

Agreed, but some tires are pickier than others on inflation. Just like a woman, nobody likes high maintenance items.....:wink1:
