So I'm in the market to get a tow rig for my blazer and went to the dodge dealership just to look around (wasn't expecting to find any deals, I'd rather do private party) but I found an '03 dodge 2500 with the v10, automatic, bare bones regular cab (it was a federal truck locally). It's got 98k on the clock, a bull bar, warn winch, tow package, and some nice beefy tires. The guy wanted $9,900. I was looking for a cummins, but it looks like the V10 puts out some good numbers and the price SEEMS to be right. The only bad is the gas milage is S**T from what i've read.

any comments/suggestions ? The cummins would be preffered, but they're pretty pricey, and I need all the $$ I can get to put into the blazer

If it's going to be a dedicated tow rig i would hold out for the cummins. Gasser tow rigs eat fuel and don't have anywhere near the pulling power of a diesel. If it was going to be a DD with the occasional tow then i would say go for the gasser.

Yea I wouldn't go with gas. Especially if gas goes back up like they say

do your self a favor and run i mean run fast from the v10 stuff.

thay are totaly diffrent and most dont like them in the end. and as for the sound thay make even a good high end exaust wont change it much at all.

get a cummins.

that's what it would be. Why so, if you don't mind explaining?

I hate diesels, they smell and are noisy. :D

Around here gas is cheaper than diesel, although diesel gets better MPG. I think it's a preference thing more than anything. I will however say this again, a gas rig will never have the pulling power of a cummins. If it was going to be used ALL the time for towing then diesel all the way.

The V-10 trucks get a bad rap cuz the cummins trucks are so good
My buddy just bot an Ex-CHP Ram 2500 just like your talking with a reunel front bumper 12000 pound warn winch and a really nice bed shell for 3500.0 it only has 97,000

yeah the gas mileage sucks 11-12 highway empty but it has decent power and it was cheap

9900.00 seems kinda high I'd pass on this one and try to find a Cummins. with the economy the way it is theres gotta be some good deals out there

what year was your buddy's and where can I get one?

Compare the prices of gas trucks versus the diesel trucks and then estimate how much you'd be driving and then see if in the time you willown it the gas truck will be still economical then get the gas, not necessarily this one but shop around.
This is the time when you don't want to jump on a deal because you will find a better deal after you buy this one.
Do your homework but really do the math to see how much cheaper the gas truck has to be than a diesel to make it good for you.

2002 and he got it in Avenal California from a Used car dealer who got it from government auction

Hold out for a Cummins, noisey and smelly or not:rolleyes:, I love mine. I do alot of towing for my line of work (6,000 - 12,000lbs) loads are the norm , and I will never go back to gas. My 00 Cummins w/ an auto constantly pulls 20-22mpg unloaded on the highway and I have never gotten below 14-15mpg with my heaviest load and that was some serious hills and stop and go heavy traffic. I have 250,000 on the truck I did replace the trans, it has a suncoast with their converter in it, but other then a mild box (edge juice) it is mostly stock. I even run a 285/75/16 tire (approx. 33.5") with a leveling kit and still get the mileage that I do, I have driven a few V10's both dodge and ford and all I can say is - UNIMPRESSED. Well that is my $.02 :D

Just called him he paid 3700.00 not 3500.00 but the year and mileage were right lol

new body style with a V-10??? I thought once they changed bodys they dropped the V-10 and it was just the hemi or the cummins??

Don't quote me on it, but from what i've read they started the new body style in '03 and kept the V10, but then dropped it in '04, so if I am correct, the '03 is the only year you can get the v10 in the new body style.

Cool didn't know that

I had a 98 dodge V-10 and a 2001 Ford V-10 and both were good trucks IMHO there way better than a STOCK 454 or a 460

I did like the ford V-10 better though

But if your in the 10,000 dollor range a nice first gen Cummins should come your way if your patient

Yeah, I'm definitely keeping my eye out. Only problem is I can't go car-less, and if I find a killer deal I have to try to sell my truck in a hurry to get it, and by that time it'll be long gone.

Thanks for the comments/suggestions

well a 2003 with those miles might be a decent ride the newer body style is nicer than 94-2002 body style if you like the truck I say go for it any pics??

I'm going to swing by and get some pics sometime this week. Just out of curiosity, do you know how your buddy went about getting that truck? As in, craigslist, or through a gov't auction.

Also, if anyone just happens to "come across" a screamin' deal on a dodge cummins ex. cab 4x4... pass it my way :D:D:D

hey bought from a used car dealer it literally came of the transport truck that day it

it was the same kind of deal as you he wanted a towrig for his Bronco and found this of course the dodge wheels better than the bronco now LOL
