Good GOD Rene, your one.....

it would be fairly easy to make them.. the hardest part being cutting the radius for the axle tube... other than that it doesnt look like there is much to them... I think I might look into making some.. my brother is pretty good with that kind of stuff, and the welding, etc... It was my idea a while back to make the 14 bolt FF disc brake brackets and sell them cheaper than TSM, BUT a bunch of people have already outdone anything that I could do..

mike

Well they're not rocket science...frankly I would have used 2 1/2" tubing but we didn't have any in the shop

Doing it the way I did is fairly time consuming, I highly doubt I could make a cost effective set of perches when the labor is considered. I spent almost 3 hours on them.

So, how did you cut and round the radius for the tube diameter on the solid blocks?

I cut the side pices in a band saw...then clamped the pieces to the table. I then measured the center of the piece, measured the radius i wanted and made a center punch mark on the steel table. Then I used a set of dividers with a piece of soapstone taped to one leg and traced the radius on the piece. The actual cutting was with a torch...then I matched all 4 'side' pieces in a vice and use my die grinder to clean em up a bit. I started with a carbide burr and when i got close switched to a 60 grit 'flap wheel'...

WOW!!! That IS a lot of work!!!

I can see where you put your 3 hours into them.

I figured the radius for the tubes would have been cut roughly and then ground down with a grinder that you could pick different sizes from. And then just lay the block on the 'bench' and grind away. Get it? Does anybody have anything like those? I know wood shops use them. Didnt know if they had anything for metal.

BTW, what size were the blocks to start with from scratch?

I wonder if a metal cutting hole-saw for a drill at the same size radius as the axle tube, would be a worthwhile investment? that would speed up the process considerably and you could make one hole, for one perch..(both sides)... hm just something to think about

mike

I couldnt remember what those wood sanders were called until now. They are called 'drum sanders'.

Wonder if they have these 'drum sanders' for metal? That way you can get a 3 3/8" diameter 'sander' and it would do the grinding instead of sanding.

The material I started with was 1/2" x 5 cold rolled flat bar for the top piece. The side pieces started out as 3/8" x 3" hot rolled bar stock. It was never a solid block...

A hole saw could work, but in 3 3/8" size it would be pretty spendy. It would also take a long time to bore through 3/8" material. The torch and die grinder is about the fastest way.

If we had a rotating table on the milling machine I could have done them with that...

Here's a link for fabbing spring perches.....not exactly "our" brand but the principal is the same. Not quite as pretty as Rene's but hey its a freakin' spring perch.

Well that was what I was going to build for Brandon...but without any 2 1/2" box tubing around I was forced to fabricate the whole thing.

I believe that link you posted was Depdog's perch's...also very beefy!

Rene,
No problem with the perches, not worth getting your boss on your a$$ for making them.

Thanks

Now I got it!!

Thats still beefy sh!t!!! I'm still trying to find the seam where the sides and top metals meet. Cant see no seam anywhere. Either you are a damn good welder/grinder or I must be going blind!!!

The upper plate was beveled about 40 degrees on the top edge. This gave me about 3/8" weld depth. When the whole piece was welded I had our machinist mill about 80 thou off the top and true them up. He was having a slow night anyways...

Those are awsome Rene. I also would like a set, but all I can say is you really stepped in it now.
