Did some mild/moderate wheeling last weekend, about as much as you can do on stock suspension, axles and 33s, which is surprisingly capable. Even ended up being the "official Jeep recovery vehicle" having to tow a YJ with a dead trans to the end of the trail. No problems and drove home fine, a 2 hr trip.

Yesterday I pull the rear cover to change out the water logged gear oil and find a couple metal chunks on the magnet. Found a spider gear missing some chunks off of 2 teeth. Not the whole tooth just chips off of them. I cleaned it up and put the cover back on and new fluid in. Driving it again today.

So I guess I won't be wheeling for a while. How long do you think this rear 10b will last? Think I'll get the summer out of it provided it stays on pavement? I have a set of 3/4 tons with 4:10s but no funds to go through them or for the new U-bolts not to mention 16" wheels and tires. Just trying to get the summer out of the stock 10b. What say the CK5ers?

put a lockright in it to replace those spiders and i bet it will last all summer and the next.

even if it goes, you could get one for free or next to nothing i bet just to get you by

Swap the spiders from the other axle so you don't grenade the current axle and HAVE to swap axles.

It has a G80 in it so a lockrite won't do it. Or, will a lockrite fit in a G80 carrier? I thought they wouldn't...

On that same note, I can't take the spiders out of the front 10b to put into the rear G80 carrier. Nor do I want to disassemble the good front 10b to swap carriers just to have to reassemble it later.

Now that I think of it, someone local has a 10b rear with 4:10s. I could get that and install in the rear. Then take my 8 lug 10b with 4:10s and swap over all the 6 lug outer stuff and put that in front... This all sounds like alot of work just to have another rear 10b...

Maybe I should just keep an eye out for a 10b rear carrier...

Or say F it and drive it the way it is...

Any other ideas or info?

Yes it may sound like alot of work to swap the 8 lug to 6 lug but at least you can check and repack the wheel bearings, check the u-joints, and etc. while you are there. Then you can start saving for the 8 lug 15in rims.

Only a couple weeks ago I repacked the front wheel bearings after having the front rotors turned. So I know that is good. Trying not to invest much money into the current axle set up just trying to get by for now. My last payment on the 2500HD is in September so after that I'll have some $ to play with but right now it's tough.

Will a lockrite fit into a G80 carrier? This isn't a bad investment cause I can always swap it into the front 10b later when I'm ready to do all the upgrades.

well if its just for street use until you can fix it pull your axles out of the tube and just run a empty housing, worked for my budy awhile back but he broke both front axles and crusied with nothing up front for prolly 6 months or so.

that wont work on a rear 10b. the Axles are kinda what holds the wheel on... if it was a FF rear then it would ;)

depending on how big these metal chunks and missing pieces are in there, i'd be willing to bet it was like this for a longer time than you know.

The spiders will only rotate when making turns or while off road spinning tires, or very moderately while driving down roads with long sweeping turns.

It's not like they are a high speed gear setup like a ring and pinion gear mesh.

I'd run it and be looking for a replacement while you drive, just be aware of it's condition and don't abuse it if possible.

just my thoughts :D

I agree..

Just run around in 4hi to minimize shock on rear axle and take it easy till you can afford swap

Good point. And an easy and cheap solution. Why the heck didn't I think of that...

It's not the only vehicle I have to drive, I just really enjoy driving the topless K5 rather than the HD. Took the top off months ago and it's not going back on till November at the earliest. I'm gonna take my chances driving it for now and try to keep it off the trails. Maybe I'll take the next step and weld up the G80 since it's not worth saving anyways.

Yep, weld it and toss it when you upgrade...

I miss driving my Blazer on the street with the top off...:(

After I finish the Crew Cab, I'm thinking about picking up a "street" Blazer...

i just gave away a 10/12 bolt combo for free lol, where were you when i couldnt give the damn things away
