Goodyear WR. MTR vs.BFG Mud Te. ?

Theres a place called the Tire Rack that advertises in 'Road and Track' and other mags. They have the 35" MTR for $155. The website is www.tirerack.com. Might be worth checking into if you want the MTRs.

I beg to differ on your opinion on the BFG AT's. I had them on my 2 wheel drive truck pulling out a buddies 4 wheel drive furd in some pretty icky mud and they dug right down and yanked him out. Pretty good for an AT. Of course an AT is not going to compare to an MT, but BFG AT's are pretty decent. Dad kept them on the farm truck and they saved his butt a time or two with the horse trailer on the truck.

I've got a mind like a . . . a . . . what's that thing called?

For the price of the mt/r's I would buy swamper ssr's hands down! The tread wear is about the same and the price is about the same. And the swamper is ALOT beter off road hands down!!!! And it preforms well on the road, the best radial off road tire you can buy for good on road manners and great off road maners. This will be my next set of tires!

Well, I'm sorry to say, you're wrong. All Terrains are crap, and the next time I take the truck out, I'll take some pictures to prove it. I understand you view this as my opinion, but I would call it more of a theory than a feeling--it's based on fact and experience. Absolutely worthless even in the best of mud. No grip at all. Try M/Ts and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. ATs are no better than road tires. They don't have an increase void ratio from regular road tires, which is what makes tires work in mud. AT's tread blocks are too close together and interlocked, which makes them great on-road, but completely worthless off-road.

If you're pulling out a 4x4 with a 2wd, something is definitely wrong. I find the fact that you even own a 2wd truck to say something about your use for vehicles--I would never consider a 2wd fullsize pickup, unless it was built for racing, and even then it'd be hard for me to get in it and call it a, "truck". If a 2wd truck made it there and pulled it out, then it must have been really embarassing for the 4x4 owner indeed!

I am not a hardcore off-roader, I go when I have to or once a month. If I didn't have mud tread tires I couldn't make it up my driveway in the winter though--even if I was locked in both ends instead of just one. This winter I should invite you guys to my house. You think your truck is tough? Make it up my driveway in the worst of weather on your first run and I'll agree with you. NO, my truck doesn't make it up in the worst of weather. And when it does, it takes quite a few runs through the deep snow.

I would suggest BFG M/Ts to anyone. I don't know about the MT/Rs but I would definitely consider them, they look like a great tire. I am probably not going to get the BFGs next time just to try something different.

bigbad82k5,

I was actually considering the SSRs. It'll either be them or the MT/Rs most likely, or TSL Radials. I want Boggers but I drive too many road miles to have a bias ply tire (30,000 last year).

Lara, I just checked out your movie on my computer--your K5 has mud terrains of some kind on it--if you off-road that thing, you should know exactly where I'm coming from. Usually I like to be behind those with All-Terrains, that way they won't throw too much mud back when they spin all 4, plus I know anywhere they can make it, I'll have no problem.

I would even venture to say that in most instances, I can go farther in 2wd with M/Ts than I could with my truck with 4 brand new 35" All Terrains. I really believe this is true. I've got a set but they're bald, I use them for spares.

In fact, I really hate the term, "All Terrain" completely, because it makes people think they're off-road designed/oriented tires. Most of those people are also IFS owners who I tow back from where I 'wheel.

bigbad82k5 - can I ask what you are basing your comparison on?? I assume by the way you talk that you have had a set of both the SSR's and MT/R's on the same truck and compared them in the same conditions?? You may very well be correct, up to a point, but when offering up such strong recommendations it would only be fair to the person asking the question if you had real life experience. I've never had SSR's on my own truck but have had the opportunity to see member's of our club with them on and compare them to similiarly equipped vehicles with other brands of tires (including Boggers, MT/R's, BFG muds, etc...just assuming they are all aggressive mud-terrain type treads, all-terrains don't count) going over the same obstacles. Honestly you could not tell any real difference between them by just watching them, where on the other hand a vehicle with a locker compared to one with an open diff is very noticable.

84_ Chevy - I agree with you on the all-terrain treads. We've had several "rookies" come out and join our club on a trail ride for the first time with various brands of all-terrains, and they all learn quickly that if you want to get into serious fourwheeling around here you really need some sort of mud-terrain tire. All of our trails are mostly consisted of dirt and there is always at least some mud to deal with.

I have'nt owned a set yet myself,I only ran TSL's,Boggers, and Gumbo mudders on my current rig.
A good friend in my club has a 76 bronco locked front and rear. When I first met him he ran TSL's and swithed to BFG's,when the new MTR's came out he bought a set of them. They wore faster that the BFG's, they cupped a little
but every tire does on his rig.Anouther fella in the club switched to SSR's this spring and loved them so Sam bought a set for his Bronco in May.He's tried alot of tires because he one of those people thats always wanting something beter, but he said this is the only tire that has done every thing well.He drives it forn a daily driver so he goes through some tires.I've road and driven the his rig with every tire above and
thats why I say the next set I buy will be the SSR's.They preform beter off road and still ride very good.Plus their are alot more sizes to chose from.

He quit running BFG's because he kept busting sidewalls. He never replaced any of the MTR's.The MTR's did seem beter than the BFG's though.

Damnit! I said they won't compare to an MT, but for an AT they're pretty good. And I owned a 2 wd because at the time, I didn't offroad when I bought it. I bought it because I need tto pull a trailer and I had AT's because I had to get the trailer out of the mud...I needed a truck. News flash, trucks aren't built for just offroad!

What I was talking about was that you basically implied that they did not dig what so ever, and they do. I was impressed with them because they were only an AT. I would never compare and AT to an MT because they are designed for different uses.
The BFG AT's impressed my freind enough to go and get the BFG MT's because he figured if they can make an AT that does that well offroad, the MT should be a bad ars. Those MT's he bought are on my truck now.

Now, I will return your flame. Do you know the real original purpose for a truck? To haul stuff. It was not originally built to offroad only.

And don't ever look down on someone because they have/had a 2 wheel drive. Their use for their truck is different from you.
I bought the blazer for the truck aspect of it and it being covered first and foremost. Just so happens the 4x4 blazer is awsome offroad and offroading is fun so it's a hobby of mine.
