Well, I'm sorry to say, you're wrong. All Terrains are crap, and the next time I take the truck out, I'll take some pictures to prove it. I understand you view this as my opinion, but I would call it more of a theory than a feeling--it's based on fact and experience. Absolutely worthless even in the best of mud. No grip at all. Try M/Ts and you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. ATs are no better than road tires. They don't have an increase void ratio from regular road tires, which is what makes tires work in mud. AT's tread blocks are too close together and interlocked, which makes them great on-road, but completely worthless off-road.
If you're pulling out a 4x4 with a 2wd, something is definitely wrong. I find the fact that you even own a 2wd truck to say something about your use for vehicles--I would never consider a 2wd fullsize pickup, unless it was built for racing, and even then it'd be hard for me to get in it and call it a, "truck". If a 2wd truck made it there and pulled it out, then it must have been really embarassing for the 4x4 owner indeed!
I am not a hardcore off-roader, I go when I have to or once a month. If I didn't have mud tread tires I couldn't make it up my driveway in the winter though--even if I was locked in both ends instead of just one. This winter I should invite you guys to my house. You think your truck is tough? Make it up my driveway in the worst of weather on your first run and I'll agree with you. NO, my truck doesn't make it up in the worst of weather. And when it does, it takes quite a few runs through the deep snow.
I would suggest BFG M/Ts to anyone. I don't know about the MT/Rs but I would definitely consider them, they look like a great tire. I am probably not going to get the BFGs next time just to try something different.
bigbad82k5,
I was actually considering the SSRs. It'll either be them or the MT/Rs most likely, or TSL Radials. I want Boggers but I drive too many road miles to have a bias ply tire (30,000 last year).
Lara, I just checked out your movie on my computer--your K5 has mud terrains of some kind on it--if you off-road that thing, you should know exactly where I'm coming from. Usually I like to be behind those with All-Terrains, that way they won't throw too much mud back when they spin all 4, plus I know anywhere they can make it, I'll have no problem.
I would even venture to say that in most instances, I can go farther in 2wd with M/Ts than I could with my truck with 4 brand new 35" All Terrains. I really believe this is true. I've got a set but they're bald, I use them for spares.
In fact, I really hate the term, "All Terrain" completely, because it makes people think they're off-road designed/oriented tires. Most of those people are also IFS owners who I tow back from where I 'wheel.
