My 02 Duramax sprung a leak!

I can`t see were it is coming from?? Anybody go an idea where it could be from
It`s not bad but I can smell it and you can see where it is spraying on near the P/S pump to the right of it.

Probably the weep hole on your water pump. Look up from the bottom for a better view

Yeah I think it`s the water pump...good times! :haha: I thinks it`s a 4 hour job, with the right tools! :doah:

Truck starting to turn into a project truck.

It'll take longer than 4 hrs. Be a good days job IMO...

Gotta drain the coolant, remove the fan, shroud, rad (just for extra room), belt then finally the water pump. Clean the gasket surface on the engine, re-install everything and re-fill the coolant...

You can get an OEM water pump at rockauto.com on the cheap shipped to your door btw

I did my 05' and it wasn't as bad as some say. I bought the Linde kit which comes with the correct socket and special flywheel lock tool. Easy to install the lock tool though the inspection plate and then just loosen the harmonic balancer bolt. If I remember right I was able to skip some steps and just worked around some things. I don't think I removed the radiator and might have put a piece of 1/4 luan plywood in to protect from hitting it. I know it didn't take me 4 hours. Worse part was my water pump was leaking because my turbo had blown (broken shaft) and really made the engine cough hard. It didn't leak before my turbo failed. Once I replaced the water pump I found the real reason it was leaking. Turned out when the turbo blew and the motor coughed I ended up blowing a head gasket slightly. I had been running for over 12 hours towing my 36' toy hauler back from Sturgis. Motor was good and hot and as loose as a motor gets. The damn head gasket just gave enough to pressurize the cooling system. Motor ran perfect even after it happened. I had almost 200k on the truck.

My rad should be cleaned anyway so it wouldn't be so bad if I had to take it out.

I can`t work on it till next weekend. Should be OK to drive till then,if I watch the level of the coolant?

Just make sure the pulley on the water pump isn't loose like the bearings are gone. I put mine off for a while and it locked up, threw the belt off and then wrapped it around the crank behind the balancer and took out the front main seal. Turned into a disaster lol
