Gov-Loc Issues

One thing to consider is the RPM (or MPH as seen by the GovLok). If you were spinning the axle at greater then the equivalent of 20 MPH (someone will correct that figure if it's wrong) - the device "unlocks".

BTW I saw your post on the off road list about wanting to buy a J@@p.....!! There - your secret's out /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I gotta 14bolt gov lock and like it always feels open on the street(except for when I get on it and try to spin donuts or get sideways). And seems like its always locked in the woods... I havent had it in there to long though, I would deffentally rather have a detoroit and theres plans for one though... just because of the strenghth but so far so good

Yep, thats waht they're designed to do. When they work good they're not half bad to have infact a 14bFF open or posi are usually the same price so in a sence it's free traction. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif.

/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif Yeah I know... not sure what I was thinking. See, we camped in the rain all weekend... I had brain mush. Anyway I still think they have a pretty high coolness factor, no matter what anyone else says, but I am sticking with my Blazer for a couple more years at least. Once I get behind the wheel I'm so comfortable. I might get a Jeep in the future because I think they have some good points that I can't make the Blazer have. But for now, /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gif for me!

chicks dig jeeps for some reason /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif, I think there kind of cute myself. Especially when there upside down! /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I don't know why it is, either. Except I loved watching the Dukes of Hazzard when I was just a little girl. Must have made an impression. Then again when I think I'd be a "Jeep Chick" like so many others, it's a major turn off. At least the Blazer is unique if nothing else.

"DO NOT use any suplemental "friction modifiers" or "Limited Slip addatives" - straight gear oil is all that is needed."

Twiz, Can you tell me why you think running with no additive is a good thing? Maybe some info to back this up with?

Then later they find out that detroit is loud as hell and shitty on paved roads which would not be good for a daily driver...and forget towing with one.

Is your opinion based upon fact from personal experience or from what other people have told you? I have a Detroit in my 14B and I consider it one of the best mods I have.

Yes I know it is there if I decide to romp on the gas going around a corner and an occasional clunk, but certainly nothing like your description.

My GM service manual indicats what Twiz said. It doesn't say don't use it, it lists plain gear oil with no additive.

Yes it uses clutches, so I'm not sure where I stand on it. Probably like the 205's that used ATF, it's not THAT big a deal whichever way you go.

As per a G.M. bullitin that dates back quite aways.
If I remember correctly - the concern was something about the longevity of the pinon/carrier bearings, I think.
We used to run a bottle of GM's friction modifier through the diff if they had the "off-high-way *Pop*". Then, instruct the customer to have the rear-end serviced again in 3,000 miles or so, with standered (at the time) 80/90.
We don't see this problem at-all now. Probably due to the extensive use of synthetic gear oils.

For the reccord, I don't think I'd run anything but synthetic in everything I own, now. (except 9.5" that use a silicon gasket)
