now that winter has gotten here im having a real hard time getting in and out of my k5, i have broke both my feet and the latest was in feb 2013. so jumping out in the cold weather is horable, and i dam near fall every time.

i would like ideas on some sort of o shti handle, or grab handle for getting in and out.

i am also looking for ideas on steps. they must bolt to the frame as im not putting holes in my new rockers. i like the rock guard style on diy4x, but as stated i need a step, or im going to take 2" of lift out.

thanks
mike

As far as a step goes, We had a old half ton Ford that sat pretty high, and we decided to (bare with me, this is some pretty "afro-enginnered" stuff here) get some chain, hang it from the front and rear cab mounts, and it worked great for years, it was a little tucked under the truck, but not terribly. They were still on there when we sold that truck.

LMC sells a set of exterior handles that go on the pillar, but in all reality you could put virtually any suitable handle on the outside if you want to and mount it right.

As for running boards, The tube style from DIY4X is nice, and I think ORD offers some as well. They are better at preserving ground clearance than the traditional style

There's a couple in our local 4wd that use a rope step to get in and out of their Jeep. They just leave it hang but I've thought you could rig it up with a lanyard so you could pull it up before closing the door. Then it's not always hanging out since I wouldn't exactly call it "cool" looking.

id like to keep them inside, not sure how much i like the looks of the outside B piller, but it is an option.

thinking A piller and above the door, anyone ever try this?

Strap type step dropped from seat bracket outside door? Think stirrup

Same idea as above

I've been getting by with some bailing twine. Is definitely better than jumping and pulling on steering wheel. I'm actually leaning towards switching to chain so it's a more permanent/sturdy option but its definitely been a huge assistance. If you're truck is more driving and less wheeling you could really do any type of a rock slider/step combo bcuz you aren't having to worry about the ground clearance loss as much. I'm sure DIY could mod his a little bit by extending it further from body/ lower drop so it's more usable as a step point.

The later K5's HAD a handle over the door, no?

Not sure how they were anchored, there might be enough strength there as-is, or they may have re-designed the roof a bit from previous versions.

It's funny, I was just thinking about this issue today. I was thinking about making a strap and bar set up that bolts to the seat mounting bolts. Pull it out to get in. Then, pull it back in before you close the door. Or if you forget, then you will have the bar hanging out of the door by the straps and it might ding the paint.

For a grab handle, I was thinking of sewing a loop in the same strap material, put a grommet in the other end and bolt that to the seatbelt shoulder harness bolt location.Use velcro to hold the loop end of the strap to the side of the seat so it will be there to grab when you need it.

I probably need to go get some 1.5 or 2" nylon strap to see if this will work.

i do like the idea of the chain or something anchored to the seat mount. pull it down to get in and pull it back in and leav it on the floor the rest of the time.

i did some more looking at the A pillar and their isnt enough room because of the seal, same with above the door. im not going to mess with thoes. im going to find something creative for a grab handle on the outside.

Google grab handle, and you'll find tons of different designs.

On my 90 k5 there's a passengers assist grab handle but nothing on the drivers side.
