I'm replacing the front axle U joints on my Dana 60 and was wanting to know if there is supposed to be a grease seal on the axle tube.

There is a seal where the tube meets the pumpkin, but not at the outside of the tube where the U-Joint is. There are aftermarket company's that sell seals you can put there, but I am not a believer, yet...

Why not a believer? Companies have run outer axle seals for a long time. I just have yet to buy myself a set of outer seals.

MAD4WD has them. They don't ride on the axle. Just tightly to it then pack full of grease to make the real seal. I guess there is a chance to trap water, don't know we shall see.

Well, I might have to do something. I got a lot of dirt and grime in there (and I don't even really wheel my truck). This what I could fish out of there.

Is it greasy in there or did you spray it out? The outer axle seals won't be a fix for leaking inner seals. If there is gear oil leaking out(which doesn't really look to be the case, but I can't tell) it will just leak into the axle tube and probbaly eventually leak out anyway. I am puting new inner seals in my 60 when I do the overhaul and then probably the outers as well.

The seals are featured on the main page.

No grease in there, just mud. I pulled as much out as I could.

I replaced my inner seals with the newer two piece styel seals. Unfortunately I have done this several times in ths past year because the axle housing itself was in such poor shape. In any event, the last time I replaced the seals I noticied that the tube was not that dirty, there really isn't that much space in there. My concern is that if I put seals on the end, I can't tell if I lose an inner seal again. Let me know how it works out for you, I may be a beleiver yet.

I was/am suspicious too of these outter seals. I've just installed some of the MAD4x outter seals and they actually look promising. With 2" of grease to go through they seem like they just might work. The slight movement of the shaft in the housing from turning etc is so minimum that I have some real hope for these things working. As far as not knowing if an inner seal goes out well, I'd rather spin off the filler plug a lil more often to check fluid level/condition and know that lil inner seal isn't the only thing keeping filth and expensive contaminents outta my dif.

I have been painting my house and still have a lil more to do then the K5 will get some TLC and I'll report back.

I was thinking of ordering a set since my D60 is apart. I ordered those new style D60 inner axle seals off ebay.
