I have a 14BFF under my trailer (converted pickup bed, ya know) and I may wanna steal some parts out of it.

To keep the bearings lubed, then, can I use regular wheel bearing grease, or do I *have* to keep the thing oiled up, which is what I've been doing?

I figger slathering the wheel bearings in something thick oughta be okay for a while ... but how long?

If you pack them good and pack the hub then there should be no issue. There is no gear oil to wash the grease out so I feel it would be just like the front wheels.

No technical backup on that just logic.:D

If the axleshafts are in it you need to oil it. I have taken the shafts out of full floaters and made caps for the ends and greased the bearings and it works fine. Then you dont have extra unnecessary moving parts.

Ah, oddly I've done that, cut the caps off the shafts, so I'm good on that point.

:Woot:

Thanks guys!

I think you should come over and pick up the 8 lug D44 that I have sitting in the backyard, use it for the trailer, and then use that 14 bolt for a more proper use... :D

If it's a steering axle, it would be really complicated to put it under a trailer. :deal:

And I suck at backing up trailers as it is ... with a steering axle I'd be positively dangerous! :haha:

I also still have those two front Blazer seats and center console if you want them. Or will the missus beat you like a red headed stepchild (rimshot) if you bring more stuff home...:eek1: :haha:

I guess I don't get it...so you want to steal the axle shafts out of it for something else? Why can't you just do what others have said and make some caps to seal up the ends and then just fill it with oil like it was originally intended to be lubed?

Axle shafts are gone. I am debating stealing the pinion and its shim and/or the ring and pinion, which would make filling it with gear oil challenging.

LOL ... it's not the missus, it's the lack of storage, or total lack thereof. I've got so dang many seats already =))

Aaron, you can grease the 14ff bearings just like you would the front wheel bearings and remove the shafts and make some cover plates for the hubs and you're all set. No need to worry about the hole in the spindle unless a rat decides to crawl through the axle tube and into the bearings. :haha:

More likely a possum, up here, or that raccoon that accosted you :haha:

Dude, don't you know the difference between a raccoon and a SKUNK. :haha:

what about dust, dirt, etc. getting down in there? Especially if he yanks the pinion/ring and yoke out there will be a good size hole. Plus it'll be facing forward picking up everything in its path...

You can find 14ff's for $100 and get 10b/12b's for free most of the time...why not just plop something cheap or free under it and just leave it be?

Oh, was that was it was? I'm used to them; I leave 'em all alone, they leave me alone. I just don't want the little gits dying in my trailer axle :(

Kurt at diy4x made me caps for the pinion and axles, and I just filled mint back with gear lube so it would be high enough to travel down the axle tubes.

Well I'd cover up the pinion with a plate, wouldn't just leave it open. The skunk convo with Scott (4x4High) is just cuz he was accosted by one when he was up here at my place and thought it was a big deal

I've got a 12b I could put in there, but then I'd have to switch rims and tires, take the brakes off ... this axle is already done :deal: (It's also the 88+ IFS wide dually 14bff, so it's bloody useless anywhere else, which is why it ended up under the trailer to begin with. I may or may not steal the parts out of it, I was just checkin' feasibility and path of least work ... three trucks plus two trailers means I have my hands full keeping the dang motor pool running :haha: )
