"Gredda's" Build / WTF / Help Me! Thread

so far so good....didnt get up to highway speeds though, will do tomorrow...I had enough "garage fluids" and decided not to drive too far.

i need to replace my wheel bearings though...when the truck is jacked up, i can grab the wheel and move it around, and its not the ball joints.

i should have taken a picture of the ends of the HD tie rod. its a monster.

so, i need to go have the truck inspected again, because my county requires a emissions test. The truck idles a tad rough, and i can smell fuel ( i think)

so, i already replaced the wires and plugs, so i decided to replace the cap and rotor. even tho the old stuff didnt look bad to me. (old cap is blue)

could just be mind tricks, but i feel like it runs better.

also, just took the truck out on the highway and MAN! does it drive and steer better with the new tie rod.

super productive today. decided to sand the top with some scotch brite, and cleaned it real good with simple green.

then i hit it with some self filling primer. going to decide this week what I am going to about painting it. I am really tempted to just herculiner it. I am going to spray actual bedliner in the back of the blazer, but may just use the herculiner for the top. I dont care if it fades some....i prefer it to be flat black anyway.

I like it! Keep up the good work!

If you ever decide to toss the side panels, I need a set for template for my topless Suburban; see sig.

Also, How is the Herculiner holding up. I am looking for the best roll on bedliner for a project, but I want it to be thick and durable.

Keep up the good work!

where are people getting the cheapest herculiner? online? i saw a gallon kit on ebay for 70 shipped. i am going to go for it and roll the top only.

You may not need to replace the wheel bearings. A clean, inspect, repack and proper adjustment may have them back in working order. If those tires are flopping around like you described, don't drive it. At the very least, tighten them back up first before you cause irreversible damage.

But I would pull them apart and clean and inspect them and if they're good repack them along with a new hub grease seal. That way, when you go to replace the b/js, the wheel bearing part is done just need to remove and replace.

Top is coming out nice. Can't wait to redo mine, though I was gonna roll on some semi gloss rustoleum cause that's what I have laying around. Thought about the herc for the top but I don't want that much texture on it. Have you looked into Durabak (sp?)? They offer their bedliner coating without the gritty texture.

so i am waiting to pickup the herculiner for the top...so i decided to finish pulling the interior carpet. good thing i did too, because it was wet up under the carpet on the passenger side. I havent had it in the water, so who knows how long the moisture has been sitting there. it looks like some rust has developed near one of the seat mounting holes.:doah:

well, i thought about it, and the PO said the heater core had leaked, and thats why the carpet was stained. And he said he replaced the heater core.

Im in TX and havent used the heater except to verify it worked when in bought it.

i guess i need to do a real thorough cleanup, and see how bad it is. the camera makes it look bad, but alot of that is the wet/gross carpet padding that looks like rust.

In my old K5 the PO was a total jack@$$. He had the heater core go out, didn't clean it up and still managed to drive with the headache, and on top of that, he even had a bunch of oil all over the carpet on top of the coolant. The heater core went out in the bronco one night, gave me THE WORST migraine to the point that I wouldn't drive it at all until I fixed it. Took about 2 days for the heater core to arrive, installed it the same day. Oh and by the way, I'm digging the build man, this is definitely my favorite color scheme by far. My dad used to have the same color scheme, same year, had me wondering if this was his old K5 :thumb:

I haven't had carpet in mine for almost 2 1/2 years, its noisy, but I was so glad a few weeks back when we had a ton of rain for days and I discovered I have a leak up under the dash... I might not have seen it if I had the carpet in there. Also check where the seatbelts bolt to the body of the cab/bed area. If your top seals leak it runs down and dampens all the carpet and side panels and promotes rust there as well. I know, because my truck rusted from the inside out!!!

Also, old Top seals will hold and leak water for days after it rains. I have seen water seep out of mine even when it's been dry for days.

well, i think its old water or something. here in TX it doesnt rain! plus its been in the garage.

unless its from when I washed it...water got in there somehow.

either way, i did order new seals for the top because they were so bad that when i took it off, they destroyed. thats what prompted me to redo the top with all new weather stripping and paint/bedliner.

i still havent gotten myself 100% that herculiner is what i want....i want tough, durable, black, and never mess with again. fading to flat black is ok...fading to look crappy is not.

hey, when I put the window stripping back in on the removable top...is there something I can wipe the stripping with to "recondition" it? its not broken or in bad shape...but could use something

and is there anything wrong with putting the windows back in, and just running the top "as is" with the primer for a while until I decide what to do?

well, im getting ahead of myself..i still need answers to some of my old posts...but i got to keep updating to keep this thread mildly entertaining i guess.

upon inspection under the carpet...surely this isnt stock, and someone has already repaired this floor (see where the seat bracket bolt holes are - not all of them have the raised piece of "repair metal")

cool, thanks!

update - I found a jeep xj steering shaft for $30 delivered on ebay. ordered!

also, I had a large rockauto order.

ball joints
wheel bearings
seals
spindle bearings
drag links
brake pads/shoes

gonna be busy for a while!

the new plan, is to take my wife on a 3 day camping / exploring trip in 3 weeks...so LOTS to get done!

upon more research, I am really liking the idea of the durabak for the exterior of the hard top. I am going to see about picking some up and just going for it.

steering stabilizer bracket from ORD and new stabilizer installed.

WD-40 works good for rubber because of the fish oil it's made with... simple and you usually always have it handy.
