Grey ghost

So after opening the front axle, it actually looks pretty good. The front pinon seemed to be tight compared to the rear pinon. Almost no backlash.

The rear axle not so good. I believe I still see the paint front the set up on the front ring gear. The rear gear has a piece of metal lodged in the ring gear. It has been there so long. It appears to be ground into the gear itself.

Pictures indicate to me that whatever it is, it has been there for a while. I believe it has screwed these gears up.

Have no idea where it came from. Dont see anything broken or missing. The pinon seal is leaking. Wondering if that is part of it?

My guess is it was broken and someone made a half butt attempt at a repair and left this in the differential. The factory seal was gone .

Any suggestions on the repair replace it or not? The rear end I am sure is out of spec. Don’t have a tool to check it, but there is a lot of play in it. Thinking I may have to replace it.

It's easier and cheaper to replace the axle with a good used one

I agree, if it’s a stock ratio a used axle would be cheaper.

Sanded and primed all the suspension parts, then painted them.
