Griff's thread about nothing in particular.

My Mother.

About a year after she bought this house, I took over making the payments and covering the insurance and taxes. I've still always thought of it as her house, and she still is very picky on what the neighbors can see.

She doesn't like my truck collection, tire collection, camper shells. I would put some of it in the big garage, however she has it filled with stuff from her last house, barely leaving my enough room for my three big roll around tool boxes and a bench with a vise.

Does that mean it's time for you to go take yer money to another house that you can own without such strings attached? Or do you like the current arrangement?

1976 GMC K20 350, Originally had a 4 speed, now has a TH400, 4:56 geared full float 14 in the back, 4:56 geared Dana 44HD up front. In the late 90's someone was planning on making it into a pulling truck, but they never got it finished, and it was put on farm duty. It sat in a pasture for a couple years, with cattle loving up on it, denting a fender breaking the tail lights and removing a mirror. It's also got a 3 inch body lift, which has got to go.

This one is cheap enough, I'm not going to bother with jinxing it or not, also I'm 99% sure the guy isn't a flake, I've talked on the phone with him for 4 hours about old Chevy trucks.

It's surprising how rare it is to find someone selling one who actually knows anything about them.

Supposed to pick it up this weekend.

Left me know what you think of that floor shifter

Don't knock those shifters if its a manual. Although that B&M looks like for an Auto.
I once installed a Mr. Gasket floor shifter to replace a worn out column three speed in a swamp by fire light.
Using a hatchet, vise grip pliers, and a sharpened 20p spike.
The bits on the end of the column shift tube had come completely apart, and you could not drive the truck.

I drove out of the swamp in my dual wheeled Jeep, got to a NAPA store before they closed and bought the only kit they had. Got back after dark.
Chopped a hole in the floorboard with a hatchet and hammer. Used the spike to punch the bolt holes. Had it in by supper, he hunted on it the next day, and drove it for about another 6 years.
They may be cheap and look ghetto, but they work.

Originally 4 speed, since replaced with a TH400.

Around here a $400 truck would be burnt out wreck, with a VIN tag and a title.

That would be the high dollar I would pay for that truck. I would start at $200.

I don't understand putting on a 3" body lift and leaving small tires. That accomplishes nothing.

Bringing this back to the top of the pile.

I've found myself in a position where I've got the cash on hand to buy a truck outright without throwing my next few months into a tailspin.

Now I just need to find the right truck, which in case anyone forgot, is a 73-80 3/4 ton 4wd, that is a fairly high optioned truck. (Silverado /Sierra Grande) And a 4 speed would be preferred.

Looking at this 77 GMC K25 Sierra Grande and liking it, but I've been told by several friends that he wants too much for it.
Sub 8K dealer installed crate 350, sub 10K TH350, full time. 4:10 geared 10 Bolt front, G80 FF14 rear.

Bed floor is toast, cab floor is ok-ish, there are a couple spots that I wouldn't put weight on, rockers/cab corners are about the same. both front fenders are starting to go around the bottom, core support is fairly solid, but under the battery is completely gone.

He's asking $2500, and he doesn't really want to move off that number.

Just a few motivational pictures for myself.

It's a fair enough price for a new drivetrain, but recognize that you're buying the drivetrain and what remains of the truck is incidental. That bed is a pile of rust flakes, even by Northwoods standards. If you replaced the bed you might have something, but as it is I'm not sure what utility value that bed has left in it, if any. Aside from that, it seems like a typical rustbelt truck at a typical rustbelt price. You are far enough South that you should be able to do far better than that, rust-wise. But if you want a new drivetrain, maybe it will be worth it. :dunno:

Whatever you do, definitely get written proof that the drivetrain is new. The truck is pretty near worthless if he's lying about that.
