Griff's thread about nothing in particular.

Last week I pulled out and tore down a 69 350 from my buddy's 72 C20 , an he just rebuilt it yesterday, but now he's thinking about throwing an old 454 he's got in it. So I may end up "borrowing" that 350 while I piece together everything I'd need for putting an LS in it.

Don't worry, I fully plan on putting an LS in it.

Never mind that last post, I was looking at a thing on Facebook and found a 137K 04 5.3, complete from intake to pan, wih it's wiring harness, ECM, and fuse block. basically everything from the Avalanche it came out of, besides the alternator and starter. The guy is also throwing in most of a 4.8, as in the block, pistons, heads, intake, manifolds, and some of it's wiring.

All for $500, I already left him a message.

I haven't heard back from the LS guy yet, but I did talk a friend of mine out of a set of 38 inch Super Swampers.

A set of free 38 inch nearly bald Super Swampers sounds preferable to some completely bald 31 inch street tires.

At least for looking at.

Those 38's ended up being just a bit too rotten, I don't even think tubes could save them.

I originally was thinking the 10 bolts would die of fright at the sight of 38's, but on several occasions I've been told that I'm worrying about nothing, and "You can't believe everything you read on the internet" One of the people who've told me so is the manager of the service dept. at a local Chevy dealer, who's got a 79 K10 with a 468 BBC and 40's that he's been running in mud drags since the early 2000's, and the only thing he's done to the rear end is put a locker in it.
I'm not saying I'd love having 10 bolts with 38's, and I'd still prefer to get some 3/4 ton axles under it, but I think that will wait until the 10 bolts start complaining before they get pulled.

As for gearing? I'm not going to bother regearing the 10's, When they go I'll throw the effort towards the 14.

Although right now that's all secondary, first issue is getting more than 60 HP to the ground.

Also, why didn't I receive any notifications that there were new posts in this thread?

The biggest reason it doesn't have 3/4 or one ton axles already, is really just the cost, while I can find a full float 14 for about $150, Dana 44's and Dana 60's are bringing stupid money, Dana 44's, regardless of what they came from, are usually $500 or so, in junkyard fresh form, and 60's are usually atleast $700 in the same shape.

Actually, I just looked on CL and found an 8 lug Chevy 4.10 44 for $200, so I might be totally wrong and just not looking hard enough.

Question, how narrow is the rear end from a square cab and chassis? I ask because I just remembered that I know where a 4.10 DRW FF14 that came out of a cab and chassis K30 is, which I could probably get for a dance.

I know the cab and chassis axles are narrower than an normal pickup's, but not how much narrower.

C&C 14 bolt looks to be 4 inches to the skinny side. Ideally, by the looks of my research, a late model 14BFF with factory disc brakes or a G30 van 14BFF get you the wider stance.

Sqaure SRW axles are 67.5" WMS to WMS, and C&C are 63.5", factory disc are 69"+, and van are 70"

Question, Has anyone put intermittent wipers on a truck that only came with two speed wipers?

I assume it's just the stalk and the resistor module, is it that simple?

@The Griff
If You are working on a '84 and up, then yes, change the wiper switch in the column, plug the pulse module in line.
You have to have the wiper switch which matches your column. (Tilt or non-tilt)

Dredging this back up, seeing as how I'm getting closer to being able to afford to actually start messing with it.

Lately I've found myself leaning more towards an LS again, ( That blue twin turbo 5.3 K10 didn't help. ) And now I've got a friend wanting to build a LS powered go-fast toy, and between both of us we think we can handle the wiring.

So currently the "plans" are as follows; (Not including cosmetics)
86 K5,
4 or maybe 6 inch lift,
LS/TH400,
stock 10 bolts,
35's, or maybe military 37's.

And later on, as funds allow, replacing the TH400 with an NV4500, and the rear 10 bolt with a full float 14 and 8 lug outers on the front, possibly even a Detroit locker.

I've basically ruled out getting a D60 for the front, as it would be the most expensive single part by far.
Most people have told me to not even bother changing the rear, unless I plan to run 40's or bigger, at this point I basically want a 14 just for the ability to run 8 lug wheels, since I've got loads of them, and the only set of 6 lug wheels are the rallys that are on it now.

Thought about that before as well, chances are I will go 4 inch in the end, just to avoid driveshaft clearance and slip yoke issues, It's just that I like the 6 inch stance so much.
